Why does it take longer to measure oil now?..
Before after a run and the oils is sufficiently warmed up, it only takes around 5 to 6 seconds to check the oil. Now even after a long drive and the oil is warmed properly it takes 40 or more seconds to measure the oil. Is it a sign somethings about to give? The electronic measuring stick perhaps? 997.2 electronic oil measuring system

Just wondering why it was not like that before.... Less than 10 seconds to about 40 secs to a minute is quite a gap. Im now thinking that it could be related to engine servicing because im nearing 10k km on the year on march...i think. Is the oil measuring affected by oil viscosity? New oil shorter inteval, old oil longer interval...

I think I am going to be flamed about this but I thought the best most accurate way to ck oil level is when the engine is cold, like in the morning. After all, it takes some time for all oil to drop into the oil pan.

Our cars have five oil pumps. So that means there are 5 sumps of some kind to pump from. They must need time to bleed down or something. I really miss a Dip stick. It not only let you check the oil but you could smell it and actually look at it.

If the engine is up to temperature it takes no time for the oil to drain back. There's not much draining to take place anyhow as the camshaft covers have their own scavenge pumps to remove any oil from under the camshaft covers.
I know with my Boxster once up to temperature it takes just a few minutes of time after I shut off the engine that I can check the oil level without waiting more than 5 seconds and the level reading agrees with a reading taken after the hot engine has sat longer after being shut off.
Some engines now one can't check the oil cold. My Turbo for instance has to be hot (170F or thereabouts) for the oil e-level to even allow a reading to be taken.

5 mins after warmup and 10 mins. cold is what it takes for mine.

Dfi s and pre DFI are different correct... pre 09s still have dipstick ?
I did notice if I didn t like the measurement on the dash that if I waited a few mins and did it again I would get an extra block on the level. At first I was old school wanted a dip stick but now I m used to it.
FYI, If you try to do it when the engine is too cold it will tell you so on the dash.

Dashboard measurement will not show up unless the motor is at operating temperature.

Unless I'm missing something, Untrue. I check oil 1. In the morning before going to work, 2. Leaving the office (after 10+ hrs of parking).
