JohnAMG is infamous around these parts
I recently found out navigation through Google Map...

Recently I discovered I can use Google Maps to give navigation instruction through the bluetooth system in the 997.2. It would give detail voice instruction including name of the street and extremely easy to use. The visual/map is display on the phone. I have tried with iPhone 4 and 5S and also with Mercedes Benz systems and all works flawlessly. There is no need to update the PCM navigation anymore.

You can also use Waze or any number of other iPhone navigation apps in a similar manner. Navigon should be used if you think you'll travel to areas outside of your phone's data range or if you don't want to maintain a constant data connection, which can be expensive, as it downloads the maps directly into the phone and thus doesn't need a constant data connection. But it's a little on the pricey side.

The only problem is that it requires a cellphone signal.
So if your traveling through the mountains or places with no/weak cellphone signal, Google Maps does not work.

That's when you'd use Navigon, which downloads maps to the phone and doesn't require a cell phone signal.

You can find the current version of Navigon in either the Apple store or the Google Play store, depending on your phone's OS. The price varies depending on how many maps you download and how many in-app "extras" you purchase. It's a very good system, all in all. It was a German company, but I believe they were bought by Garmin not too long ago. I've had it for quite a while. I have all the North America maps, but only keep the states I use (mostly CA, AZ and NV) downloaded on the phone.

I was grandfathered into AT&T's unlimited data plan and have that on my iPhone 5S, so I don't mind the continual data connection most nav programs require. But I do like not being dependent on the connection if I happen to be in areas with poor cell service.

I can second Navigon. I've got it on my iPhone. I purchased the US/CAN solution. So I then specify which states/provinces I want to download/install on the phone.. went on a business trip to Minneapolis, so I installed (already paid for, just had to get the data onto the phone) the Minnesota data.. then took the iPhone and suction cup holder with me and stuck it to the windscreen of the rental car... easy-peasy. No data connection being needed is key.... otherwise your phone's battery will be run down quicker than you can think, and as mentioned, in remote or many urban zones (depending on providers & buildings) the data connection goes down.

Do you mind taking a screenshot of the Navigon icon on your phone?
