I Love my 997 but I want a 991, But I Like 997 More..

Hey
Hate to say this possibly annoying post...
But...

I have a Carrera Base, 2006. I know how to drive it like a real boss. I bought it a few years ago and its changed my perspective towards cars. Its an amazing machine.

But I need to update. This car is old.. stuff is starting to wear. And I'd like the new technology.

And I LOVE the looks of the 991, (although its a tad too big looking).

But I have driven the 991 a few times on test drives.

And I have to say - sadly: I do not like it as much.

This really saddens me since I want one badly, but I can't justify it.

A Few questions:

1.) Anyone else in my boat?
2.) Can anyone sway me towards the 991?
3.) Is there a way to make the 991 FEEL like a 997?

The 991 has requires higher RPM to create high torque. Which is really too bad. And I don't find the steering super tight. I drove an S.

The cornering is also amazing on the 991, but its a tad too artificial for me.

Please I do not mean to offend anyone. I realize you're passionate about your cars.

What about the 991 GTS?

In regards to steering, if possible try to find one without power steering plus, hard to find come by I know or build your own. It's a great car you would learn to love it as I am sure I will when the day comes. For now a 997.2 is perfect, the technology is just fine and it is more "raw" feeling. I'm sure you've peeked at 997.2s, were the updates not enough? The 991 is quite refined, maybe too much so. But if you want the latest and greatest that will be it. I do believe the 991.2s will be receiving a power bump if you are able to wait for that. Good luck!

Look again. The 991 is the first 911 that to my eyes looks better from up front than from the rear. There's something off about the way the flattened roof, the longer wheel base and the 20" wheels come together. Me, I'll pass on the 991 hoping the 991.2 or 992 in 4 years will do to the 991 what the 997 did to the 996. I'll be all over that one.

I went through the same thing recently and I decided to sell my 997.1 S and get a 997.2 4S. Couldn't be happier. The PDK, 9A1 engine (more power, in my case WAY less oil consumption, quicker/better starting/cranking), more modern PCM (proper Nav, bluetooth, ipod connection, etc), Sports Exhaust, Sport Chrono and updated look... all make for a great car. I also waited until I found my fav Porsche color combo white ext/black int.

Is it an 991? No, but it's def in my opinion a solid upgrade from the 997.1.

My 2 cents.

agree with marlon. in the same boat. not in love with the 991 way to soft for me. was thinking about a 997.2 but couldn't really justify it because i love my current car. (although 997.2 is a solid upgrade). instead I decided to slap a supercharger on my 997.1S and ride it out until the 992 arrives like sandwedge said.

To me it sounds like you need a 991 based on your statement of having new tech in a car. After driving all the new models this same thing is causing me to consider selling my pristine 996TT for a newer P-car.

+1 This.

I opted for a .2 over a 991 when moving up from a 997.1. I wanted to like the 991, drove more than I care to remember trying to find the perfect version and just could never replace the smile and satisfaction I get from driving the 997.2. Doesn't mean the gen 2 is a better car than the 991, it just wasn't as satisfying to drive for me.

I'd consider a 997 GTS. Might be a good compromise until the gen 2 991 cars come out. If you love the look and feel of the 991, get one. Either way, you can't really go wrong.

Like others have said, a .2 GTS would be a great car. On that note, have you considered simply adding bluetooth and iPod to your car and maybe throwing some new wheels and exhaust on to freshen it up a bit and make it FEEL new again?

Sometimes I will throw a new mod on my car when I get the urge to change and it makes me feel fullffilled.

Why do you guys recommend the GTS specifically? I have a friend who owns a porsche shop and also recommended it.

Is it because the HP is the same as a 991, and its still a light little 997?

Also, are these commonly in PDK?

I saw one online for sale.. but it was in PDK

I am keeping my 997.2 specifically because of the things I DON'T like in the new 991. To me the proportions are off with the new wheelbase. The corporate-common interior changes, while good in some areas, make the 991 have too much in common with every other Porsche model (if I wanted a Panamera, I'da bought one). Electric steering? In a Porsche? Blasphemy!!

The OP should continue to look for a low mileage 997.2 in an S or GTS configuration with the drivetrain he desires.
