Newbie question...phone system/sim card...
Hello...I'm less than one week into owning my 2005 997 C2S (first Porsche I've owned but have loved the 911 for the past 40yrs) and I friggin' LOVE IT... anyway...
The onboard phone system (no handset on mine, just the push buttons on the navi/radio system) how do I activate it? I've spoken to three different audio folks including my cell phone carrier and no one can answer the question...how do I activate it?

- Just get a regular SIM card and pair it via Bluetooth to my phone?
- What type of SIM card?
- Anything else I need to know?

Hi there - welcome and good luck with your awesome car.
lets go back to the basics - as per the previous post - Do you have the phone module installed?
put a 2g or 3g sim card into the slot - i hear 4g sim cards will not work-
there is no bluetooth - you need to actually put a physical SIM into the slot
press the phone button and see if you can change the settings for PIN code etc. if all is good, the functionality will work off the bat.
if none of this works - it is likely you do not actually have the phone module installed - just because the button is there does not mean it was installed...
if this works - great, enjoy the phone functionality. I find it good enough to be able to answer incoming calls and make the odd call a week (am driving a porsche, who cars about the rest of the world :-))
if not, 4 options -
get the module - 7-800 bucks plus installation
try an aftermarket like the dension for around 500 pluss installation (gives you bluetooth and audio as well but a limited few people have had negative experiences)
change the entire head unit to a kenwood, alpine or pioneer - probable 2K with fitting but at least you are fully up to date (if you have the BOSE sound system add another 1K to enable an after market install...) you lose the OEM feel but gain a 2014 radio unit...
buy a bluetooth handsfree unit and put it on the sunvisor- not pretty but a perfect solution nonethless
to be honest, the porsche phone module is very limited (even in 2005) and a poor value install - If you are a heavy in car phone users, i would get the dension or another aftermarket product.

(am driving a porsche, who cares about the rest of the world :-))
The aftermarket unit isn't a bad idea (I was quoted $1400+/- for a top of the line Pioneer unit installed) but...I'm not too hip on that. All I really need is my iPod hookup and I'm good. I guess I can keep a wired headset in the car for that odd time I need to take a call or put it on speaker phone - that'll get me off the phone sooner anyway.
Thanks.

I have Nav-tv, Will connect your phone via Bluetooth so you can dial from the head unit or your phone and you will hear it through the speakers and speak through the microphone in the car, it will also come with the lightning cable to listen to your music through the original system as well

Is your goal to get the Porsche phone system to work or just to be able to make call in the car? As mkoenigsheim eluded to, there are other options.
I'm considering the iSimple system that connects through FM. And you also get to stream music through it.
