997s with over 100k true higher miles
#17
My car has 88K miles on it, just have to keep up with the maintenance should last a long time. I have considered selling my car because too many people looking for a Porsche 911 are scared of high mile cars. Not sure why there is a stigma with higher mile P-cars. My experience is that low mile Porsche's seem to be at a slightly higher risk. Those that have had parked cars for years let the oil and lube sit there taking a toll on may lines and tubes. I have seen the rubber gaskets fail or become brittle from sitting for a while. I could be wrong, but I would consider a car with higher miles.

At 100K, things will need to be replaced, you might want to check out the prices of those parts and labor (especially if you are going to take it to a dealer). Your 100K mile 997 might cost you $30K and your maintenance might cost you $5K just for one visit. What if your IMS decides to explode, do you have $25K to replace the engine. My assumption is probably not if you are looking for a 100K mile 997. This is the advice I tell my friends when they asked me about used 997.1s.
2006 Carrera Cab here with 104,000. Runs like a champ. Original owner and dealer serviced since day 1.

New Member/Recent 100k + mile 997S
Approximately 1 week ownership of a 2005 Porsche 997S. Purchased with 102k miles. Guards red/Black interior with red gauges. Runs and drives great will need Front control arms Slight knocking and squeaking in front suspension (squeaking/knocking began after purchase... smh)
I have owned several 911s' all with high mileage. I recently traded my '77 911 turbo body for a 2002 911 Carrera with 88k miles. After spending a load of money on clutch, IMS upgrade full service, etc. I decided I just couldn't live with the look of that front end.
I had an opportunity to purchase a 2006 C4S With every and all available options for that year. A very clean car for $27,500. Clutch and other service had been completed days before it was offered for sale. This car was offered with 134k miles. Unfortunately I could not sell the '02 in a timely fashion and the dealer offered me a very disrespectful trade amount for the '02.
The way I see it, if your gonna spend the extra money on a low mileage garage Queen that's out of warrantee, its more of a risk. With a high mileage car at least you know the car has been used and perhaps most of the bugs have been attended to. Any car is better when driven. The Porsche 911 is built to be driven and driven regularly.
The saddest thought is that these cars are difficult to sell with high mileage so when you do purchase a high mileage 996-997 you have to expect to loose money when you make the decision to sell. Its very unfortunate. I just don't think these cars are as bad as people make them out to be.
I will be trolling the web for the C4S I missed. I will trade sell this red Beauty to buy that car even with the additional mileage it will have.

They get COOLED with 12 qt of oil......hence they are oil cooled, not air cooled. In both cases the air removes heat from the cooling medium.
The real difference is antifreeze is a better cooling medium than oil.
You see this not only in cars, but in heavy machinery. The little stuff is oil cooled, the big heavy duty stuff is water cooled.
So all things being equal, a water cooled engine should last longer than an oil cooled one.

25k for an engine!!! Come on with that BS. My buddies 95 went and a very reputable shop here rebuilt the engine and had him back on the road for $7500. Its stupid posts like this that causes undue concern. Not to mention the low mile cars are the ones that seem to implode.

Well I just picked up a 20111 Carrera GTS with 45k mi and a bit of factory warranty left. I was told a good exclusionary extended warranty would cost upwards of $6k. For that kind of money I'll take a chance on the known reliability of 997.
In fact I fully intend on using mine as a DD until I get well past 100k mi. Even if I have costly repairs it's still cheaper than the depreciation on a new car!

But they are not. The air cooled were engineered and built to last forever.

I'm coming up to 98,000 miles on my 2006 Carrera S. Car runs great.
Things I had to do to service it:
Water pump-80,000
Clutch-90,000
Pass window track replaced.
Coil Packs
Needs new horn and alternator cable.
