2nd Gear "Grind"

I was about to shift to second around 6k, and I'm guessing, MAYBE, I didn't have the clutch all the way in...but there was a grind for second....I let off the throttle and it did it again...allowed the car to slow down and "eased" it into second without incident.

However, it still "grinds" going into second with higher RPM or downshifting!

Driving easily I can feel the gear is not that compliant and smooth anymore.

My guess is the synchro for second gear may be toast? I'm hoping second gear isn't damaged...it pulls great once in there though...no issues there!

Is this something that can be fixed from the gear shift area or does the tranny have to be removed??

I'm really bummed about it...still drivable but it's in the back of my mind and I cannot have it like this for long.

Any advise would be helpful!

Thanks

Heard back from the dealer today. LOL

I was told there are only 2 options to fix my car!!

1) Rebuild the Transmission - $ 13,000.00

2) Purchase a new Transmission - $ 9,000.00

Spoke to Bauer Porsche in Oakland, CA and Chris tells me he can repair the transmission, replace the synchro and other items that go with that repair for "around" $ 2,000.00.

Guess you know what route I'm going with!!

Guess the dealer just wants the easy way out for the repair or just quote something crazy so no deal with it.

I thought they would come back with $ 4,000 to repair it...not these crazy quotes. Geez!

Now I wonder if I should by my wife's Panamera from there.

Going to check out Bauer Porsche in Oakland when I get a chance for the work. They are close and they can do the work while I'm on vacation.

The dealers lead mechanic did tell me that they would replace both 1st & 2nd Gear synchro since they are on the same slider. I would tend to agree with that since those two gears see the most torque and use.

What doesn't go well with me is that I was told they would ONLY warranty those two gears as that is all that's being fixed.

So what the hell does the 13k include????

New clutch was one additional item. That's nice.

Another weird comment made was I was my clutch was warped!! Needed replacement. It was too stiff and not right.

Hummmm I bought the car THERE And the clutch has been the same since I got it. It's always been stiff or should I say harder to push than most. Why wasn't I told this when I got the car???

FD Motorsports drove my car. Said its a bit stiffer than most but didn't see anything wrong with it.

What can you do? Who to believe sometimes?

I know one thing, my repair will NOT be at the dealer. I'm not going to call others either. Maybe someone with money to burn will say sure do it, but not I. I'm not rolling in money but got enough to do the job but I just can't bring myself to spending that kind of money for a job that isn't that complicated.

They didn't provide a "written" quote for what was included, but based on our conversation, I assumed that they would replace those items, but the comment, they would ONLY WARRANT 1st and 2nd Synchro's didn't make me feel comfortable that they were going to replace. I just wanted to leave because there was NO WAY they could talk me in 13k of work, none the less for 9k on an exchange tranny.

Taking my car to Bauer Porsche in Oakland, CA. They have done this repair before and I feel real comfortable with them. I will see them on Saturday and they say about 3-4 days for the job.

Will advise when work is done.

Heard back from Bauer. Syncro is bad. Getting first and second replaced. Clutch is worn...getting that done. Found an oil leak as well...getting that done. Overall, repair is estimated at $ 4k plus or minus. Get 10% discount for being a PCA Member. That's a plus.

Much better pricing than the 11k the dealer wants...geez! What a rip off!

Finally got my baby back today. Tranny is all fixed. As you can see from the pics, I had some work done. I was a bit shocked how worn my clutch was, way past 50%, but the clutch has felt this way since I got it...so previous owner must have been riding it! Since I was getting the syncro's done...clutch was there...needed it! Boy what a difference that made in the overall performance of my car taking off and heal toe shifting!!

Now onto the tranny......

Initial inspection done by dealer confirmed that the syncro was bad...so once the repair shop, Indy in Oakland, CA, Bauer Porsche, opened it up, we found that the pic below was the reason for the failure....broken outer ring! Indy says he never saw that before.

Porsche has a service bulletin about "new style" syncro's that are the only style you can buy now. There was an improvement in the location of where the ring meets the sycro to allow less torque in the same area of the ring when they meet with the gear and match up. That means now I had to replace 1st Gear as well as 2nd Gear along with the main shaft. As you can see from the pic, the main shaft had some wear...glad that was repaired! Indy says this gearing style is similar to the GT3 and if it is...what a great "upgrade" for me!

Shifting is incredibly smooth and easy to do compared to previous shifting. It's more noticeable in 1st and 2nd since that's where most of the torque is generated.

Indy found the main shaft seal also leaking, got that replaced as well. The Selector sleeve & guide sleeve also got replaced along with the slave cylinder since that was worn as well. Used Mobil 1 gear oil, synthetic and didn't opt for anything else. Wish I didn't have to wait two weeks for the job to be done...however it's done and felt good to be back in the saddle again!

Dealer wanted 13k, to rebuild existing tranny, 7k for "new" tranny, plus removal and install. I feel the 5k I spent was worth it, however the parts were very expensive and 85% of the job cost was the parts....Yikes!

That basically covers the repair...if I missed anything that someone has a question on..just ask and I will try and answer.

Up to 58k right now. Got the car, from the dealer at 18k. When I drove it, the dealer told me that the 4S has a heavier clutch than other models. My first Porsche....I didn't think that much about it.

It's been very heavy the whole time I drove the car. It was heavy because it was WORN!! LOL I felt so stupid when I seen the plate...wow. If I only joined the forum before I bought the car I could have gotten a new clutch from the dealer!

I know how to drive a clutch..been driving them since 17. I know I don't ride them...but the previous owner was an older gentleman, but how do I believe that since the dealer has not been totally honest with me! LOL

Anyway..enough of that part of it. I'm very pleased that it's been replaced and the tranny feels soooo good now. The heel/toe into second is like a knife in warm butter!! LOL
