Dension 500SBT Install-- Notes and Questions
Add me to the multitude of threads about this Dension system. I have an '06 S with Bose and CD-C, no nav or phone.
I considered installing it myself, but ultimately went to Technik1 today in NYC. Gus was great, super nice, and worked on it most of the day. He also did my Passport Max2 hardwire and it looks and works great.
These impressions are only a couple of hours old and might change over time. Here's the good, so far:
1) The bluetooth audio streaming from my iPhone 6 has worked great.
2) When the bluetooth phone calls go to the PCM properly, they sound clear on both ends-- caller and called.
The not-so-good, so far:
1) I'm getting the "System error: CD Changer not available" message on startup.
2) About half of the time, phone audio isn't passing to the PCM when a call is made-- i.e., no ring, person on the other end, etc., despite the call being connected on the phone. Switching from Gateway 500SBT to the iPhone speaker demonstrates that they are there, but switching back again to GW 500SBT yields no sound-- they can't hear me or I can't hear them. The other half of the time, the phone system works splendidly.
3) When phone audio does work, it is only coming out of the passenger side speakers.
Gus spent quite a bit of time with the phone on Dension. We didn't know 2) was a problem at the time, but 1) and 3) Dension attributed to my PCM software not being updated. It is currently 3.3.
Any ideas on any of this? Thanks a bunch!

I have '06 S, non-Bose, CD-C, Nav and phone.
I have an iPad mini connected to the Dension permanently in the car via USB (for Music, Google maps... etc), and pair my iPhone 6 via Bluetooth (for phone calls).
1) I don't get the "CD Changer not available", but I get the "Phone not available" message instead. Tried changing the order of the devices on the optical loop (per suggested by Dension) did not eliminate the message. I learnt to live with it and the whole PCM screen is covered up by the iPad Mini anyway.
2) no problem with phone calls via bluetooth for my set up. Do you experience the same problem if the phone is connected to the Dension via USB directly (and disable Bluetooth)?
3) phone audio also comes out the passenger side only. BUT, mine is RHD, your is LHD, and phone audio comes out the opposite side for us both. So I think this is the way how Porsche configured the phone audio on the PCM originally.

Thanks simoncpw.
On 1) I'm going to be irritated if I have to learn to live with this. It will just bother me. There must be something I can do to get this fixed.
2) I will try with just the cord. I haven't tried that yet.
3) This is a small gripe for sure. Really, #1 and #2 are the biggest ones.

1) actually if you have only one device (CD-C) in the optical chain, you shouldn't be getting the message. Did you loop out the CD-C or are you leaving it in the chain?
Thanks simoncpw.

Phone speaker only works on opposite side of driver. When my system stops working everything stops including radio,cd,nav, phone.Very frustrating! The latest firmware I uploaded from Dension so far is allowing everything to work flawlessly, but it's only been a couple of weeks so we shall see. Good luck with your situation!

MYC2SPC - which version of firmware are you on now?
And I thought the CD-C and Phone modules need to be looped out since the Dension unit replaces them?

The car just spent a second day with Technik1. The error refuses to go away. He tried another unit, flashed it again, etc.
For anyone who has been successful, are any of the following necessary:
1) Software update for PCM 2.1 (mine is an '06 C2S)?
2) Coding out the CDC using PIWIS (like in this thread: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...available.html)
I think they are not using the bypass feature with it connected to the CDC because when I turn on the bypass, the CDC is not functional.
Otherwise, the unit continues to stream music well and I just made some calls with it-- the first call often doesn't work, but the second, third, etc., do.
I need to make the decision whether I should deinstall the unit, live with the error, or go spend money at the dealership messing with software updates and PIWIS coding.
(By the way, Technik1 is standing behind their work 100 percent, despite the challenges-- Gus has been a great guy to work with on a personal level).

For my case:
1) Software update for PCM 2.1 (mine is an '06 C2S)? No, I did not do any software update on for the PCM.
2) Coding out the CDC using PIWIS (like in this thread? No. But in fact I think you have to leave the CDC ENABLED / coded because the PCM needs to think it has a CDC in order to talk to the Dension.
I still get the No Phone message on start up by I think that's because my car has the phone module and coded. I didn't bother coding it out and learned to live with it (also PCM screen is pretty much covered by my iPad anyway so I don't get to see the message anyway).
Not sure if it has anything to do with this but did you get single or dual FOT version? From the Dension website:
"The Gateway 500S BT connects to the MOST™ ring as a CD-Changer therefore if you do have a CD-Changer already installed in your MOST™ equipped automobile and would like to use it after the installation of the Gateway 500S BT please choose the ”Dual FOT” version of the device. If you do not have a CD-Changer or you do not want to use it any more the ”Single FOT” version is just the right choice. - See more at: http://shop.dension.com/en/gateway-500s-bt-(dual-fot)#sthash.Pa2y4oA6.dpuf"

On 2) It seems like that thread suggest that there are two places the CDC it can be coded out or in. I wonder if leaving it in in one spot and out in the other is the answer.
They installed the Dual FOT version to try to preserve my CDC.

I've decided to live with the CDC error. Next time the car goes in for service I'll have them update the PCM software and maybe fiddle with the settings in PIWIS.
Gus did another 997.1-- a 2007-- and it had no errors, so maybe this is peculiar to something with my car. I wholly recommend Technik1. They went above and beyond the call of duty trying to make this perfect. Certainly some of the best customer service I've ever seen.

Dension 500SBT Install-- Notes and Questions
I get the CDC error on startup. If I code it out, the Dension stops working (as it needs to emulate the CDC).
Updating the Densions firmware resolved the call handling issue where active calls transferring from phone to Bluetooth did not work properly (connected to the Dension but got no audio from the car).
