Unless you are parking you car in temps normally below 0F, use 5W40.

I use Motul E-tech 8100 0w-40.

I'd use ow-40 if your in colder climates during the majority of the year. I think ow-40 is perfectly fine for most climates during the winter. 5w40 is a great weight combo, but it's hard to find.

Can I top off with other oils?

It just occurred me to that ive topped off my 997 TT twice in 1 month since getting it with Mobile 1 0w-40 and do not know what was initially in there. Im guessing probably 0w-40. Im convinced that 5w-40 may be better in this because in the dead of winter it will only go as low as 59 F! and as high as 130 F in summer.

So without knowing whats in my oil tank and having topped off twice - each time with about 0.2 US quarts - with 0w-40, can I begin topping off with 5w-40?

MOBIL 1 5W-40. I only add oil if I'm a couple of bars down - and I use Mobil 1 5w-40 also.

I use the Mobile 1 5W-40 as well. It burns a little bit of oil at the track, on the street uses very little.

Good thread, Infamous.

I've been using Mobile 1 0W-40 ($6 a quart at Wal-Mart), and seemingly quite often. I need to add about .3-.5 quarts every other gas fill-up, and have noticed a lot of soot at the exhaust tips.

I'm going to switch to 5W-40 now and see if it will consume less oil...

Available from Redline.

Most good auto parts stores will have it.

Fantastic product.

Next oil change request Redline. You will notice a difference.

Wow, .3-.5 quarts every other fill-up? That seems like a lot. I have had the car for 16k miles and I didn't have to add any oil before the 12k mile oil change (there was still one bar left on the electronic oil measure readout). Then again, Perhaps you get really, really good gas mileage (i.e. thousands of miles) between fill-ups

That is a good deal of oil usage for low miles consumption.

Make sure if you are doing short driving trips that you allow the engine to come up to full temp. Many short trips w/o full engine heating can do a lot of damage.

Remember that your oil is remotely stored. It takes a while for that to fully warm.

Also, drain and refill your oil with 5W40 Redline. Drive it 3K-5K miles and drain and replace again with 5W40 Redline to flush out the original oils.

Guaranty the oil consumption problem will be history!

Thanks for the tips, Gcalo & Sisyphus!

I was thinking it was a bit much myself, but deferred to the manual stating about 1 quart per 1000 miles. I've been adding some oil every 500-600 miles, and kinda tired of seeing those oil level bars dropping to the bottom.

I do make a couple of very short trips during the week as I drop off my little one at daycare first thing in the morning...< 1 mile from home...guess I'll need to take the scenic route from now on!

Thanks again for the recos, fellas!

Safe motoring,
Leo

These short trips are doing more damage than you realize! The oil MUST warm up or you will have tons of problems. Seals get killed if not fully warmed as to piston rings.

My office is 1.2 miles from my home. When I drive my 360 in I will drive for 8-10 miles to ensure full engine temp as full oil temp. If the ambient is in the 50's-60's, I'll drive more and do the same on the way home.

Full operating temps are important. Make sure you attain them every time you drive it.

The oil is remotely stored on a 997? I thought it was in the pan. Are you refering to the residual in the lines and cooler? I know the air cooled models have a drysump tank and a pan plug.

You have a dry sump system which means oil is stored in a resevoir not in the "oil pan".

You have also a cooler and lines which run up front. And there is a oil thermostat similar to your radiator thermostat which only opens when the oil comes up to temperature, and it will do so until the oil comes to full temp wherein it will stay open..

So all of that has to warm up. All of that!

Think of this before you do a 1 mile drive and realize the long-term damage you are doing.
