Official break in
I'm confused...people are giving me different break in periods
Judge said around 1400 and his whip broke down tonight
I've been 95% successful at keeping the rpm's below 5k, with an occasional bit of fun...I'm at 900...What should I do?
btw put in 60% of a quart of mobil one yesterday already

for the first like 400 miles, I waited for the engine to warm up (always) and maybe 80-85% throttle and take it right up to 4-5K rpms when shifting.
now it's got about 700 miles on it, I drive it like I ride my bike. Of course, again, only when it's warmed up.
The key is to wait until the engine is fully warmed up.
edit: meant to say "like when I used to ride my bike". No longer own the bike (GSXR750).

If you do not hit redline as you drive out the doors from the dealer's floor, you have perminently ruined the engine by babying it. Time for a trade in.

Its true. Drive it as hard as possible. I babied mine and now it is in the shop with 3000 miles on it. The car started sputtering and jerking and misfiring all over the place. Can somebody say Lemon?

From what I've heard, a lot of this "break in" nonsense is more to get people acclimated to the vehicles and reduce accidents. I'm with the "hit it hard" right away crowd. Only caveat to that is you really need to change the oil pretty frequently if you're going that route. This is what I do on new bikes. Run it pretty high in the revs under a moderate load and allow it to engine brake to slow down. I change the oil at 50, 250, 600, and then again at a 1000 before I go to a normal routine.
here's a link to a website that discusses this tecnique in more detail:
