DOF kit for IMS

Anyone here installed a direct oil feed kit for their 997.1?

Considering it...

I'm considering it too for my 2005 C2S if it has the big bearing, whenever I have the clutch done. I've got about 47k and clutch feels fine so it may be awhile. I'm suspecting the big bearing just because of the engine serial number value...

I'm interested in owner's opinions of direct oil feed. What brand are you considering, when to add it, etc.?

I have the 3rd and final revision of the IMS as mine was manufactured in August 2005. This IMS has a failure rate of less than 1%. A few local Porsche centres say they have never even seen a failure. I think the kit is $800 + labour. so its still a big maybe for me.

Apparently plenty of oil changes are just as good.

I had it installed when I got a new clutch, very good and complete kit. My mechanic now installs these on all cars that he builds for the track.

Mine is a 2006 C2S so it had the revised bearing, but it was leaking with 45000 miles and I didn't want to take a chance.

I own a c2 2006, and when my clutch gets replaced, the dof is going in. Cheap insurance in my book. Having a sealed bearing of any kind in the ims application makes no sense in my book.

Would changing the oil every few months be another way of assisting this issue?

I have over 40 years of vast engine building knowledge. I change my oil every 5k, I use moutol oil.
I honestly think in time, the sealed bearing will get washed out, and the grease will deplete inside. The dof makes a lot of sense. vertex auto also makes a kit to replace the late model large bearing, the replacement bearing is also oil fed.
There is a lot of noise about the ims bearing, oil fed makes sense.

I just spoke with my local shop (not a dealer) they are heavy Porsche mechanics only service Porsche, they race them, build them etc, and they said if you have the 3rd revision IMS bearing, don't worry about it as they've never seen one fail.

It depends on the service history too. Regular oil changes are essential.

I have an 06 C2S with the larger bearing. I was having some warranty work done to replace an RMS and the mechanic gave me the option to have this installed since the labor wouldn't be much more than what he was doing. I tried to read everything I could on the subject and figured it wouldn't hurt and consider it added insurance. I know the failure rate is very low on the larger bearing but Im planning on holding on to this car for a while. Somethings are better to have and not need vs need them and not have them.

to dof or to not dof...

So, it looks like a mixed bag when it comes to those who have or will use a DOF on the big bearing M97/M96.

I think there's consensus that more frequent oil changes on the big bearing engines definitely help keep the engine going longer.

A couple of questions, for those with the big bearing:
-When you pull engine/trannie for a clutch or RMS, will you be removing the seal on the IMSB?
-Did you inspect the oil filter medium at your oil changes and ever find any non-mag or magnetic metal particles? Can you try to characterize what you saw and how many more miles after the first discovery you've driven?

I'm not the original owner on my 2005 C2S with about 48k miles (with hopefully a big bearing; according to serial number, it should be). I found some mag and non-mag particles in the medium. Mostly shiny non-mag. None greater than 1 mm. Sliver-like. Maybe 1 particle every approximately 5 square inches.

Next oil change (at about 5k miles from last one; will again be using Driven DT40), I plan on dropping the sump plate and inspecting and cleaning it. I've read more than once that the M97/M96 "sheds" metal throughout its life.

I got 35k on my 06, have put 10k on it since I owned it, and never see any particles in the filter. I don't burn any oil at all. At the very least, pull the oil seal and get some oil to the ims bearing. These engine run pretty warm, and washing the grease out of the bearing appears to be a problem. All of these ims fixes currently sold revert back to feeding oil to the source.

strongeroy,
At what miles did your clutch get replaced? Was it slipping beforehand?
Did you have any other work done - like AOS or starter cable replacement?
Which brand of DOF did you use?
Thanks.
