Stop on a hill (stay in the car), put car in 2nd, leave handbrake off, and you may feel the car roll through the compression of the motor as it chugs backwards. If it's a big enough hill, it might even happen in first.
Perhaps my logic is flawed, but have you ever tried push starting a manual shift car?
You know, your two strongest buddies help get your car rolling (preferably downhill), then you pop the clutch to get the motor going; well try that in 1st gear and you'll always get the motor to turn over. But try that in 2nd gear and usually the rears will just lock up and the car comes to an abrupt halt. I went through this experience with my first few cars in High School unfortunately

So to me, leaving the car in 2nd gear is the better choice.

Am I the only one seeing it this way, or am I just a blooming idiot

Hmmm...from the manual

A firm pull upward is required to properly engage the parking brake.
If the brake is not fully set, the vehicle may roll
without control.

What to them is a firm pull I can pull the ebrake up until it doesn't go anymore and I am still able to push the car. That doesn't seem right
