997.1 c4 w/new engine

New to the forum and not an engine guy....looking for help

Found a solid looking 997.1 c4 with 38K miles. Had a brand new engine installed at 30K for a scored cylinder. Price is right...but is it a bad idea to buy a CPO 911 with a new engine installed by Porsche. Or is this a good thing cuz it has a new engine....thanks!!

My opinion is that it sounds like a very good thing if it was a factory engine installed by Porsche (or by any of the reputable Porsche engine rebuilders). We've seen numerous reports of the scored cylinder problem on the forums, often regardless of how well the car was maintained. You can find them here and on the Rennlist 997 forums so that problem isn't unheard of. I'm sure there will be some purists who will think it is a bad thing somehow so they would not be interested in it during a future resale, but I think for many others it would be a plus so I'd expect any risks/rewards at resale time to cancel each other out.

If the car looks good otherwise and does reasonable well in an independent PPI, I'd say it is well worth considering.

I recently bought a 2005 C2S that had its engine replaced because of a scored cylinder. I look at it as a very good thing getting a fresh new engine. It was installed by a Porsche dealer and came with a 2 year warranty which expires in May 2016.

I got the car with 26k miles, engine was replaced at 24k miles and I have 30k miles on it now.

No worries if the car checks out. But I would hang on to all documentation of the replacement for when it comes time for you to sell the car.
