Paddle vs. Finger Shifters / Electronic Clutch ???
Any Rumors of the new 997 cars coming with an option for paddle shifters and a truely manual electronic clutch (sim. to the Ferrari F1 or Lamb E-gear or BMW M3).

Robert,
I'm sure Porsche will eventually come out with this old technology. Wait until you try going through a series of sharp turns and try shifting at the same time ..... steering wheel position is seldom where you want it to be. Great for straight line though.

Yea, Direct Shift Gearbox,
It functions quite differently from an SMG in that it utilizes two seperate clutches with I believe even gears on one and odds on the other, allowing for faster shifts than an SMG. DSG (and keep in mind I am not a big fan of audi) is everything the SMG should have been and more, it rev matches all shifts perfectly.
We had an SMG M3 and I would reccomend to anyone considering an SMG car to drive a new A3 3.2 or the TT with DSG right after having driven an SMG car as it will point out to you all the flaws with SMG that you are unlikely to see at first. I also would not buy an SMG on a non-M car, as the setting controls are different.
DSG Explained
The SMG is simply a manual transmission with an electrically controlled hydrolically opperated clutch.

I am just getting us4d to SMG on the M6,it is weird. You lose the satisfaction of making a good gearchange and at slow speeds it it losuy on the upchange and downchange. But when you are flying amnd letting the revs soar it is utterly amazing,it is so fast you barely feel it,and allows you to use both hands on t he wheel all the time.Forget about getting your hands mixed up as you can use the gear lever, and I haven't yet mixed up the paddles.
I haven't tried dsg but have heard it is superior.

My Porsche dealer says that Porsche played a significant role in the engineering of DSG for Audi, and they were confused as to why tiptronic has not been replaced sooner. They hear the sme rumors that it will be available on the TT, but they don't know when.

I am looking at the VW Jetta GTI for my soon to be 16 year old son. The so-callled sales person told me that the VW DSG is a tiptronic transmission. I thought he was wrong. Isn't it the same DSG as Audi uses in their sport sedans? Any thoughts on this car?
