AWE headers and muffler dyno

I was just checking out the AWE website for the 3000th time this past year and no longer know what to believe. Their dyno charts represent a significant hp increase but most 6speeders are skeptical of the numbers. Do AWE and other tuners cook the Dyno sheets? Is it complete BS or what?

I wonder about this myself. I have about 400 miles on my full AWE system - adore the sound, not so sure it "feels" like i picked up an additional 39hp...the jury is still out on the power change, but wouldn't trade the visceral experience!

I would imagine you could feel 39hp. It just doesn't add up. Is there a particular reason you chose AWE over the other tuners?

How do you "cook" a dyno sheet? I suppose you could go part throttle on the baseline before reading vs WOT on the after reading. Interesting... it makes me feel better about my decision to get the PSE.

Mike from AWE offered *free* installation, *free* dyno testing, and *free* removal of the AWE system if you are unsatisfied - you just pay for the kit - for someone with a stock 997S in Philly. They are looking to prove power gains. This is over on Rennlist.

I purchased the AWE headers, cats, mufflers, GIAC and EVO intake for my 2006 997S. Sharkwerks of Northern California did the install and I am pleased with the craftmanship and sound, however somehwhat unpleased with my dyno results. I gained about 25HP to the crank with 91 Octane based on the above mods.

I sent these dynos to AWE and they told me that higher octane fuel would have likely delivered me the +39HP and their tests were done without the intake. I am in Europe on business but will post the dynos soon when I get back.

Given that I also added the GIAC and the intake I have a big questionmark on the +39 claim from simply the AWE system alone w/ 93 Octane....

Judge, I chose AWE for the obvious reasons, build quality, sound, price, and the lore of 39hp.

Oh, there is a seat-of-the-pants improvment in power, I'm just not sure how much. I think I'm too inexperienced to assess it quickly, need some more time with it.

Check this out though - I used to induce the rev-limiter in 3rd at 97-98mph, this morning I hit 101mph as the rev limiter kicked in! How cool is that! Another 3-4mph! To be fair, I should say that I also added the EVO intake; myself and my 95lb wife along with 1/4 tank of gas were in the car. Not sure how to translate the extra mph into hp gains.

Synergy, at what speed does your 3rd gear rev limiter kick in?

I was able to upload the dyno file afterall as it was on my laptop.

We ran four pulls before and after the mod install, relatively same conditions, third gear.

I always take the AM manufacturer's HP claim and divide it by 2. If it's still worth it, then I do it. So far, I'm leaving it stock.

Horsepower has nothing to do with speed in gears. Your transmission gearing determines that and unless you changed gear ratios, your rev limiter should still kick in at the same time. The only thing that increased horsepower would do is reduce the time it takes to reach a given speed.

I see, so more power affects acceleration but not velocity - Robert, thanks for setting me straight. So now I don't know how to explain the apparent increase in top 3rd-gear speed.

Horsepower affects both velocity and acceleration. Look at top speed between a carrera and carrera S. There is a increase in the S. The gear ratios are the same. This horsepower increase would account for an increase in speed in third gear.

Actually, top speed is tricky as many cars lack the power to pull to redline in top gear. So, the non-S could have a lower top speed than the S because it lacks the power to approach redline in 6th gear...ie the S can achieve a higher RPM in 6th than a S can.
