The 2006 and later 997s have the 2nd gen PCM unit that plays MP3s in the single CD slot. When you burn the CDs, you just burn them as data CDs with all the files in the root directory or you can create separate folders and then the PCM screen will give you the option of displaying folders or track names.

Right, but digital media is digital media - it's not a video format. I might give it a shot... A dual-layer 8.5 GB DVD w/MP3s would be a ton of music.

digital media is digital media < true, but I doubt that a CD reader can read DVDs. try it, see if it works and let us know.

AWESOME. If it works .. oh man ... I'd be first in line to buy a DVD burner. Right now I can fit around 170 songs on a CD ... kinda suck ***.

Quite a stretch considering most things like this are backwards compatible and not forward compatible.

Agreed, but you never know - I do a ton of tech/IT research for work, and we've found a lot of surprising things. Some commercial (Dell aka Toshiba, etc.) CD burners will actually read data from a single-layer DVD. They won't play DVDs, etc., but they will pull data from them.

Let's see if mishref finds out today... Keeping fingers crossed.

I burned a couple of dvds today (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW. DVD+RW and DVD-DL) .. nothing worked. I kept getting a disc read error. The player within the PCM does NOT support DVDs (data or video).

Well, there's your answer - sorry about your trial and error, but thanks for checking. I am getting very close to an iPod solution. Details to follow...
