You guys that are burning excessive oil (and ANY more than 1/2 quart oil burning betwwen changes is excessive), need to increase your viscosity of oil. The 0W40 used in these engines will not SEAL as necessary in any engine that does not have the the cylinder to ring clearances within spec.

Beside providing cooling, cleaning. lubrication, etc, one of the main purposes of oil is to provide a seal between parts. Without a proper seal, your blowby will increase and you will continuosly burn oil as well as increase the risk of seal leakage.

I have preached about never using 0W40 except in extreme cold conditions for years, but many continue to follow Porsche's erroneous recommendations. I suggest that you move to a 15W50 (or 5W50 at minimum) and redo the proper breakin procedure as follows. You have a great chance that your oil usage will either be eliminated or greatly reduced immediatley.

Proper breakin must be done in the first 100 -200 miles and below is the proper procedure:

1. Always bring engine to
FULL operating temperature before high revs.
2. Drive the car easy for the first 10 miles or so, varying the rpm's from 2,000 - 5,000.
3. Then, start bringing the engine up to maximum rpm's and letting the engine bring the revs back down by coasting in gear.
4. Repeat several times in order to create maximum heat in the cylinders.
5. Drive around at lower
RPM's for several more miles, remembering to vary the speed of the engine every couple of miles.
6. Repeat number 3, 4 and 5.
7. Park car and let the engine cool down overnight.
8. Repeat all the above 2 more times.

Your engine is now fully broken in correctly and can be driven hard from here on.

The above procedure will also benefit engines that were not broken in properly. As with all engines, it is necessary to periodically drive the car to redline and engine brake back to stop to insure properly maintaining ring to cylinder wall fit.

Porsche says 1 qt every 600 miles is acceptable. Hard to Imagine.

If you are burning 1 quart every 1000 miles, it has the same performance effect (and danger due to lower octane) of adding 9 ounces of oil to the gas tank every time you fill up. I am so glad Porsche says this is ok.

This sounds good. If I get a new car I may do this. With the new engine I followed the Porsche instructions.

I think that oil use and mpg vary by engine with our cars. My first engine was using 2 quarts every 200 to 400 miles. This new engine has not needed 1 extra quart in almost 5K miles.
