Pasm/psm - GETTING TO KNOW MY 997S

Has anyone every had this take control when you're driving aggressively ? Yesterday I took a freeway cloverleaf onramp, one I take everyday to and from work.
Traffic was very light and there was no one around me so I turn on SPORT and leave PSM on to see exactly how it would react to an aggressive maneuver...

God was that a bad idea !!

This is a 180 degree turn that I could take my old 993 around and feather the throttle all the way through it while being completely under control. I could drift through the entire turn but I happen to dislike replacing tires every couple of weeks anyway.....
The 997, however, proceeded to take over expecting me to be some idiot who got into a turn way too deep and too fast. So it starts braking the inside rear wheel, reduces power and steering input - really ugly.

I can see how this would have saved a novice, but it was very unsettling so I made another loop and this time shut the PSM off and was able to take the turn the way I always have.
But, I still felt like there was a bit of electronic intervention doing something to the throttle input even with PSM switched off.

Is there not a way to shut all this crap off ??

There's no doubt about it that PSM sucks. I've also been driving a 911 for a long time (over 10 years) and am constantly disappointed when I want to do a little power slide and the PSM kicks in. It makes me sigh every time this happens because it takes 1/2 the fun out of the car. All you can do is to remember to turn it off every time you get in the car so that you make a habbit of it (because you're never going to remember to turn it off right before a fun sliding opportunity presents itself). I wish there is a way to make the default position off rather than on.

Ok - then I'm not totally crazy

I was, on other hand, impressed at how well it hauled the car down during a maneuver that would have put a novice 911 driver in the kitty litter. I guess I'm just a bit upset that it assumed this was the case. But, I guess that saves lots of people and I'll just have to remember to shut it off every time I get in the car at the same I turn SPORT on.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with the car and it's ability to maintain the classic 911 driving experience while in complete luxury and comfort.

That's the point exactly - they don't make the car for you any more, they make if for the thousands that buy the car that would wreck it on a maneuver like that. That's the choice of a carmaker - build what you want...or build what sells - and the car would not sell in the numbers that it does it if had the characteristics of the old car.

It'a actually not about sales. It's about liability. Porsche is rightly afraid that if it does not put PSM in its cars (and especially the 911, which by its design is tail happy) then it could be found liable for in a products defect action in the event of an accident involving an oversteer spin. The products liability bar in the US has been pushing the argument that any car that does not have PSM (or the equivalent) is defective because the car maker could have offered the system. It's total crap to those of us who know how to enjoy our cars. And let's not forget that Porsche already was found liable on a products defect claim on the 930 for its propensity to spin.

Less liability = greater sales.

With the added weight in the 997 though, it is a bit more of a handful than the 993 was. When that thing starts rotating you better be on top of it with you foot in it or it'll snap around pretty quickly.
I want to get it on a skidpad so I can really play with it

Yes, you can still get sideways IF you remember to turn off the PSM. Of course, you cannot turn PSM off all the way. Even in the off mode, if you get really really sideways the PSM will still kick in. But that's probably not such a bad thing (unless of course you wanted to get really really sideways). I have not experienced that yet . . .yet. . .he he.

I agree 100%. It's too bad you cannot get the P dealer to make the off mode the default by signing a liability waiver.

I'm sure the guys at GIAC could do it for a small fee, of course.
