why does dealer always want to replace things!!
not that i am complaining, i went to the dealer for this rattle in the back seating area. they were very nice, and called me back in 3 hours to let me know the rattle is coming from the exhaust tips.
i was happy they found it. they then told me they will order new tips for me. again, i am okay with that. but i keep thinking... if the rattle is coming from the tips, or pipes, can't they just fix it. new one isn't going to solve the problem, is it??

JC,
It depends. Most dealers like to replace than fix-dealers make more. It cost less for the manf to fix than replace. So most of this stuff goes to warranty and cost manf parts and labor and not just labor if you fix. In addition, it maybe recommended by Porsche to replace. Porsche has a way of narrowing down complaints within TSB's. If Porsche states that noise from the tips while going over bumps occurs, replace tips to fix concern. This is how you get campaigns and recalls. Porsche rather see the part that has the issue so they can improve on it. Remember this may be occuring on other cars- not just yours. The only way to find out how to solve it is to get the parts in question back to Porsche This is why they replace most parts. It varies for different situations. But be glad, because this is why you spent the big $$$ for a Porsche.

In general I agree with your synopsus. I would also offer that Porsche does not like to pay dealers for labor. They would rather foot the bill on replaced parts (as they control these costs) than leave it up to the dealer to charge labor against warranty.

I believe there was a recall on the exhaust tips for certain 2006s. You might be in that boat.
