damn i hate hearing about this kind of BS..

If you were to overrev your car a your before it blew you think they would still deny the warranty.?

At the Portland Parade this year, there was a great talk about this kind of engine failure, what the codes meant, etc. It's unfortunate this happened to bodysurfer, but he's probably handling this the correct way. I applaude his maturity and realization that the lawyer is the only one that's going to win in the end.

This type of stuff scares the crap out of me. If they deny a warrantly claim for this guy, if an engine goes for someone who has a chip, intake, or plenum they will probably fight you tooth and nail. Incredibly lame, expecially considering porsche has no problem milking people for every last dime with options like x51 and laughing all the way to the bank.

type 1 overrev - near red line to red line. anyone can get type 1 overrev by driving their car like a man. = ) i tested this because i never mis shifted my old 996 turbo, but it had plenty of type 1.

type 2 is anything beyond redline. anyone can get type 2 overrev by simply bouncing off the fuel cut off since it is over redline. the overrevs are recorded in the # of rotations of the engine. 9000rpm means 9000 rotations per minute, which means for a split second that you bounce off the fuel cut off, you may get 50 type 2's. From what I learned from the dealer, that is considered reasonable. however, if you have 15000 type 2s, then it's likely you mis shifted.

did the over rev 3 months ago cause the damage? maybe. excessive RPM over stresses the seals and components of the engine causing premature failure from wear. but i would think the dealer must prove proximate cause, and that the over rev directly contributed to the failure of the engine.

that being said, it's cheaper than getting a lawyer involved, but it doesn't hurt to ask. you may be able to get away with contingency by having a lawyer take your case, but pay him based off % recovered from warranty.

hope that cleared things up. good luck

The 997s are read a little differently compared to 996s. There are new range values for over revs. I think they've abandoned Type 1 and Type 2.

I can tell you if you saw the blue puff, that is what smoked the motor! I raced ducat's for years and still ride many days on the track per year. I've seen guys who said their motor was weak, bang a downshift causing a major overrev and intentionally blow the motor to put a new motor in. I seen the blue puff every time!

I would take your medicine and next time watch the over revs.

Before throwing in the towell to Porsche there is one very powerful legal step you can take and it will not cost you a dime.

Write your State Attorney Generals Office and explain you case to them. By law they have to write Porsche and REQUIRE they respond back to your State Attorney Generals office for their side of the story...More often than not companys will cave in at that point because they don't want any negative publicity nor do they want to fight city hall...because the States Attorney Generals office can make their life a living hell with due process...Porsche knows in the long run even if they win ,it will cost them more in attorneys fees than to just give you a new engine.....

I've done this a few times over the years and never lost.

Try it Dude! You got nothing to lose!

I always wondered if you could reset them, or more importantly where they are hidden in the code. When I was looking at newer cars before my 99 I never got a good response to how they deal with the second owner who is still in war period and has damage fro a type 2.

The dealerships have to be able to wipe them because when they sell a Certified car I am sure they don;t sent it out into the world with all the over rev info for the PO on it.

engine death

not sure why this tread has reappeared because this event happened about a year ago. i did "take my medicine" but sure wish i knew about the attorney general option a year ago. thanks for the advice. my new engine has about 14k miles on it. i'm much more careful with my downshifting, still love this car...bodysurfer

Only the factory(PCA)and not the dealer can do it.
