Bose Sound Package a must?
#16
Nothing is a must in the 997s... Really.
All I got was sport seats, fire extinguisher, and mats and that still leaves the car way over assisted and equipped. But I digress...
You ask about Bose. I've had Bose in many cars over the years and have it now in my A4 winter car. It's nice, but not audiophile (Linn at home). What you have to realize is this is audio in a sports car - meaning leave the radio off and listen to the mechanical music.
I'm glad I didn't get Bose in the 997S - more weight and the audio is just "different". If you tweak the stock radio, you'll get a good enough sound. First off, turn off the Loudness setting and work the various tone settings.
Too many people say this or that is a must - there's no such thing. And don't buy this car thinking of resale - buy it for you. Example - my last car was a stripped M3 and many said "you'll be sorry, you won't be able to get much upon resale, everyone wants power seats and a sunroof, yadda..." Well, I sold it in less than a week and for as much as if I had power seats and a sunroof. I sold it to a fellow enthusiast who planned to take it to the track as I did and would not buy a car with power seats or a sunroof.
Good luck - you can't make a bad decision.

Call Rick Reus at www.reusaudio.com and ask him about the cost of upgrading the stereo. Add that cost to the car to decide. That being said I agree with the others here. The bose is not audiophile grade but much better than standard and WELL worth the $1400.

You're driving a 911 not a Civic, the only note I want to play in my car is the sound of my engine or exhaust. I agree the stock unit is POS but I never turn it on so don't care much. I wouldn't get an after market unit, plenty of 997s with Bose.
Get the lights, PSE, sport shifter and some carbon fiber trim and you won't be disappointed.

You guys who claim "I never listen to the radio, I only listen to the mechanical music" must never drive more than 30-40 miles at a time. Try driving from VA to PA on the highway with "the same ol' 3000 rpm song". It gets a little tedious.
I do turn off the stereo on cold starts (love that burble) and when I'm going for it on twisty roads (to listen to the engine and for tire squeal). To never listen to the stereo is a little exaggerated IMO.

My A4 has Bose and it's not bad at all. But in my Porsche, which I'm not going to drive long distances, I do listen to the engine, look around, etc. If I'm heading to the shore (1 hour on the highway), I'll put in a CD with the stock head unit. My point is that these are high performance sports cars, not your livingroom.
If you like Bose, get it. If you don't care, then don't get stuck in a "Must have / Resale" argument - get what you want.

Why do you worry about resale with Bose. It provides additional entertainment, is better than the standard unit and who gives a S++t if if it's not as great as some $2k system. The point is enjoy the car and don't worry
