I can trade someone for mine, I don't like it. I can't see the cops coming up behind me at night.

To see weather it is working park car behind you in the driveway with their brights on and then press the button, it changes obvious color within 20 sec.

As far as the install, all it needs is power if it is the same socket size between 996/997 . The light sensor is in the unit itself.

I'm very interested in this option too. Just purchased my '09 997 C2S today and asked the dealer, service manager, and techs if this was possible. They all explained that they felt it would be huge amount of work. Pls let me know if you hear anything back from your source at your dealer. Thank you!

surprised its not a common complaint!

I think all Porsches should have these mirrors, or maybe its because of my lasik, but I can't stand the headlights and big halos in my mirrors, they are like spot lights from a cop car, with the light similar to the shine of a cop cars hah!

I ended up putting a 993 auto-dim mirror in my 996 quite easily (wired it into the overhead), but I think the windshield mount of the 997 is different. Suggest you figure out the mount and look for a compatable replacement. As long as you do not mind not having auto-dim side mirrors, I suspect it will not be a difficult wiring project.

My guys said no way - and they were pretty decent about adding other options that I wanted that could be added. They called Germany and they said "nein". And I made sure they clarified it to interior only. Nein.

But good luck and if you manage, post a solution.

Too bad. I miss having this features as well. I thought it would be just a 'toy' thing, but having it in my Prius, it really is valuable. It dims just enough for the brightness of trailing cars, while flipping the mechanical toggle on the stock mirror create too big a change for many lighting situations.
Is there an after-market kit that would do the same? It seems that no additional wiring is needed - just power (which is already present). What about that new thing from Escort?

Get a Gentex auto-dimming mirror from eBay and you'll be happy.

Was under the impression the Gentex, who sells the MITO mirrors, does not sell a Porsche compatible mirror even though MITO makes them. Have been to their site and Porsche vehicles are not listed on the their compatability guide. Did you buy a mirror from them on Ebay that worked with the factory mirror mount ?

If there is a good auto glass shop in your area, ask them if they can remove the factory mount safely (without cracking the glass) - If this is a + you can use the Gentex mount and wire the mirror to the overhead console.

I have read in other threads of the use of judicious (!!) heat which can allow for the removal of the factory mount. Not sure I'd want to try that myself.

There is also a product called "debond" which I use on the boat to remove all kinds of adhesive with the help of a razor blade/knife. If you try this, I would cover your dashboard to keep drips off of the area.

I have this option on my 2009 C2S cab and can't remember the last car I have owned without this feature. It would have been a deal breaker for me. I still find it hard to believe it's not standard equipment on a $100K car. Good luck with the retrofit.

Retro-fit auto dim rear view mirror on 2003 991-996

I’m in the process of putting in a auto dim rear view mirror , which I’m buying from cartoys in Hurst, Texas. I went to a Safelite store nearby, and had one of the tech’s remove the windshield mounted “disc”, and I watched as he used the butane torch and he put about 2 seconds on the mount, and waited about 10-15 seconds, and heated it again for about 2 seconds, then with angled head players, “twisted” it maybe a quarter turn, and poof, it popped right off. He does like our maverick club, and does have a number of Porsche customers. He then glued a universal wedge shape puck on the same spot, and I’m now ready to go back to cartoys on Thursday as that’s the first appointment time I could get with 3 hours to install. They just wanted that time in case they needed it to run harness down to the fuse box. They are good there, and I figure maybe and hour or so , really, to get it done.
