clicking clutch

I have driven many Porsche's including my own Cayman S and noticed one thing that all manual ones have in common: The clutch pedal clicks towards the end of the pedal. I have found no function associated with this clicking. I have been told that this is to start the car but if I hold the clutch pedal just beyond the click, the car does not start until I push it in all the way. I have been curious about this for years and asked many people and noone can seem to give me a real explanation. Any thoughts?

Clutch pedal switch most likely for starting.

It is the "clutch switch" - if you don't press that far, the car won't start.
