06 997S vs. 02 996tt
I am seeking some input and advice here. I has an 01 Boxster S that I sold last year, and I am looking to get into a 911. I originally was looking at 02/03 C4S models, but found that I can get into an 01/02 996tt for around the same price. I am now contemplating whether to get into a newer 997, so that I have a warranty and the newest body style. I am saying this because my wife is questioning why I would spend upwards of $60K for a car that will be 7 years old. I explained that it was a turbo model, and worth the $. She said why not look at an 05/06 997 if they are around the same price or a bit more, so that I have a newer 911.
So, I am looking for some advice on whether current 997 owners would recommend that I look at a 997S or that I go for the 996tt.
Any feedback and advice is greatly appreciated and will go to good use.
Thanks.

This has been debated over and over. Do a seach and you will find countless threads. If you want the comfort of a car under warranty get a 997. If you want the serious power and mod ability you have to buy a 996TT. Huge difference in power between the two. Either are beautiful cars....

TT hands down. I wouldn't even think twice about it. Although I say that being a power junkie. The TT's are only limited by your checkbook. The NA cars have a pretty finite ceiling when it comes to hp mods.

I would say it depends on what you are planning on doing with the car. Daily driver - 997S. Weekend car - 996TT.
Clearly the TT has a huge power advantage but the 997S is easier to drive and live with on a daily basis for me. Good Luck.

I was pretty much in your situation as well: I had an '02 Boxster S and wanted to upgrade. I had to choose between an '06 Carrera S (new) or a used 996 Turbo.
I couldn't stand the 996 headlights and interior (not trying to offend anyone, but it just wasn't for me). When I sat inside, I saw the same ergo issues I had with the Boxster: poorly designed vents, gauge cluster, cheap plastic everywhere (this time, some of which was covered with leather). The interior never really felt like an upgrade.
When I test drove it, it was not what I expected: Heavier, but with tons of torque! Man, what a rush! Driving it felt great, but I couldn't get over the old interior and lack of warranty.
When I test drove the 997S, I knew I had to have it. While it didn't have the same neck-snapping, pull you to the back of your seat acceleration of the turbo, it sounded mean and was easier (for me) to control. I felt it was an appropriate step up for me, and I like the interior so much more (I still have my issues though).
In retrospect, as a current 997S owner, a turbo is a turbo! Its a car that has to be respected and runs with the best of them. The 996TT has so much mod potential and carries its own set of mean looks (even if I feel it is an acquired taste).
I've gotten used to the power in my 997S now, and I'm looking to Supercharge it soon.
If you can get a 996TT and are not absolutely in love with the 997, you should get one. It has so much mod potential and has a few pluses over the newest Turbo (more predictable AWD set up and higher horsepower potential from mods).
997s if you absolutely have to have it! I'm still trying to figure out if I'm a turbo or gt3 guy, but I'm in no rush since I'm enjoying my car so much.

I went through the same process in March/April 2006. I really liked the '03 C4S that my dealer was offering, although I too was not a fan of the interior design (dated look) or headlights (couldn't really tell if it was a 986 or 996 from head on). I felt it had good power, and I am fan of AWD (being a loyal Audi quattro fan). Unfortunately (or fortunately), I couldn't agree upon a price with the dealer.
Next up was an '02 996TT. The power was exilarating, but it was way more power than I was used to. I'm sure I could have easily gotten used to it. To me, it felt like the TT was driving me instead of me driving it. Also, my wife was making me think long and hard about dropping that much coin on a 4 year old car. I really liked the look of the 997 but it was just out of my budget. So I decided to just put my purchase on hold.
Within a week of my decision to put things on hold, my salesman called me out of the blue. A customer of his who bought an '06 997S in November '05 just traded it in on an '03 996TT w/ x50 package. His customer was waiting for his X-51 package to arrive from Germany and got tired of waiting. The 997S only had 1,400 miles on it. I drove the 997S and knew it was the P for me. I love the modern yet classic looks, the interior/ergonomics, and the feel of the rear engine/rear wheel drive combination. The PSM gives you plenty of lattitude to have fun without being overly intrusive. It's plenty quick, has better low end torque than the regular Carrera 3.6, handles extremely well, and can go faster than I ever dreamed of going behind the wheel. My salesman made me a decent deal and I drove it home the same day.
Good luck with your decision. You really can't go wrong.

/\ /\ /\ What Ag Surfer said. There are plenty of aftermarket warranty companies out there for piece of mind. I have one and it has been great. Also, here is Chicago regular 996 and 997's are all over the place. You rarely see a TT.

Get an '05 997 for high $50's and Super Charge it. You then have more HP than a 996TT, have RWD, newer interior and weigh about 250lbs less.
