PSE is a WASTE of Money!

Okay, I cry uncle.

I had installed the Fabspeed bypass pipes on my 997S - they are just too loud - ear splitting volume under acceleration (in a cab) and had cops looking my way on a regular basis.

I had the real PSE on my Boxster S and loved it with Fabspeed cat bypass pipes - sounded perfect. Deep with no resonance.

I seriously considered dropping $1200 on ebay or $1750 at suncoast for the true 997 PSE. But just couldn't bring myself to part with hardearned clams when this hack is SOO easy and cheap.

Anyway, someone here had mentioned the dude on ebay selling hacked mufflers - I looked at his design and added to it - using 2" pipe sections rather than 1". Welding a 2" pipe between inlet and outlet pipes did the trick! Perfection!

It sounds completely awesome - sounds EXACTLY like the OEM PSE, maybe even a bit louder.

All this for $175 for 2 hours labor at the local muffler store. And please, no comments on the butt-ugly welds. Of course, the install takes all of 45 minutes by yourself with jackstands, maybe even ramps. Very easy.

Below are pics and link to the videos.

Yikes - 21 lbs per side (far less than Fabspeed's claim of 55 lbs)

hey! Great job.

What do you think if you welded a 2inch section to a fabspeed exhaust muffler?

I need to find out if the shop threw out my stock mufflers that I did the switch..

So did you do this mod on your stock mufflers? And you did the welding?

Porsche did the pse version 1 similar to that using a 1", otherwise too much exhaust flow is diverted. Good job. Liike to hear it with a 1"....

Nice mod - I'll still take the PSE with the ability to mute it when I want, but that looks like a decent alternative if you don't care about that

Well will this work on a Fabspeed exhaust? To weld a 2 inch pipe or 1 inch pipe conecting the two.

I wouldn't say it's a waste of money, I like the fact that it's OEM and has the ability to be muted when needed (re: your comment about police). I'd have the same question as JCS, if your setup passes emissions since it reroutes the exhaust preemptively and if any negative backpressure is created because of the bypass at both ends of the muffler.

Emissions have nothing to do with this as this is all happening after the cats..

why would you do that? you'd probably be close to bypass pipes at that point.

The bypass pipes are around 1/2 of the price of the fabspeed mufflers. Then you have to figure in a couple-three hundred bucks more to mod the fabspeed cans like this. The fabspeeds are pretty loud as it is. If you were add a 2" connecting pipe or even the 1" like the PSE used to use, I bet it's pretty damn loud.

abdullah, d-dog was referring to doing this mod to the fabspeed or any other aftermarket mufflers for that matter.
there really is no point, especially if you paid full price for the mufflers, 1200+200(mod) to get just alittle quieter than $300 bypass pipes.
to mod the oem mufflers like this makes lots of sense.
if i remember correctly, jrgordon actually picked up some used fabspeed mufflers, and it looked like they were a special made quiet version, or maybe one of the earlier releases because both people who installed those mufflers thought they sounded quieter than stock.
but he said there is a guy in LA that does this bypass mod to alot of the aftermarket mufflers since the customers are sometimes disappointed that the sound is not as loud as they expected.

I did it on my 996 by cutting the cap from the third chamber and connecting a 2.5" elbow to it, would this work on a 997? Mufflers look similar to 996.
