Stereo install in 997S with sub box

Hey everyone,

I just thought I'd post what I have in my car in case any of you might need something to show your stereo guys... mainly with the box. I'm really happy with it, so I'll start off there.

It's a custom made fiberglass box for two JL Audio 8" subs. It's a sealed enclosure, but there's no divider inside between the two. These here are 8W1s. I have 8W3s coming. The box was then covered in a very good match of leatherlike material. Then, the fellas did a great job at matching the Porsche interior stitching. They fit snug behind the rear seats when they are up. I had it done this way because I'm having a roll bar installed next week and knew that I needed all the room from the seat backs forward. It's really amazing how well it fit in first try. Check out these pics.

Then, I have my install of the Pioneer AVIC-D3 Nav Unit. It's not a very imaginative install, but it works. I'll be trying to have a better surround made and then install it. In the meantime, it's working fine.

For some unknown but frustrating reason, I can't get the pic of my amps to upload. But, the install's basic and I'm happy with it. It's a JL Audio 300/2 amp for the Focal components in the doors and a JL Audio 250/1 for the subs.

When the 8W3s come in, the amp will go to a 500/1. PorscheAudio, what do you think, buddy?

All that stuff looks awesome! Did your installers have any problems with all the fiber optics, and are there any side effects of going with an aftermarket headunit and getting rid of the PCM?

Thanks buddy. I like the way it looks too. They used all the possible speaker cables that were there stock. I know of no problems that they had with the fiber optics. Side effects of going with an aftermarket headunit: They pulled the old one out with an incorrect time on the clock, so I have to take it back to the dealership to have the clock set correctly. As you likely know, I also don't have the lap timer and recorder inside the PSM now since there is no PSM. Everything else works wonderfully, other than my steering wheel controls, which also don't work. Just the obvious stuff. The Nav on this unit, in my opinion, is no better than the factory one in ergonomics. However, the way that the audio/video works is wonderful.

Hope this helps!

carmos,

It doesn't have as much compression, of course, with the windows down, but they still sound nice. With 150 watts per channel on the front, the subs blend in well with the volume up. I've had some big hitting systems, some with a broader range of notes and all (12W7 in my Audi Q7, and in my Range Rover, with 1000/1 on it). But I really like 8s. Especially JL 8s. They are so friggin tight, and you can set the crossovers to allow them to play some midbass and they take it really well. I'll likely still go to the 500/1 and the W3s, but for no reason really other than that they are available. Know what I mean? Thanks for the props, and let me know if I can help with anything else. Also, these guys at the stereo shop said they'd build more just like mine. It really is a perfectly fitting box, at least for a coupe for sure.

Oh, I also just got the server to take the amp pic as they are now. May be good to know really what width of setup the trunk will take. Here it is!

Sorry for the delay.

I can't really read it. Did you do a 250/1 and 300/4? They did a great vinyl job on the sub enclosure. Maybe I missed it, but what are you using for mids and highs?

Are you going to swap that sub amp for the 500/1 when you get your 8W3's.

Lastly, where the hell is your spare tire?

Actually they're the 250/1, which will be a 500/1 with the W3s, yes... and a 300/2. Since I am not using rear speakers, I didn't need the extra two channels. Saved a few unnecessary bucks. The mids and highs are the yellow Focals. I can't remember what the model numbers are, but I can find out. The box is in the garage.

The yellow ones are the focal K2P's. Good choice. I would imagine the w1s are not keeping up with your fronts though... You've got a ton of power on some really high end components.

Where is your spare tire though? Do the 997's have that air pump fix a flat thing?

Yeah. K2Ps. It's amazing how LOUD they are. And the subs really do struggle to keep up. And yeah, the 997 has the fix a flat thing.

I'm pretty happy with it all... I'm sure I will be when I get the bigger bass in there.

How much did you get charged for the box to be made? Can they replicate it and sell one to some of us?

Why didn't you go with tens? The 10's I'm installing only need a .5 cubic foot enclosure. Seems like you have the room for it.

I've had 10s, I've had 12s, I've had 15s... just never had 8s. Thought it would be neat. This box is so kickass that I'm sure I could sell it if I wanted to 'up', but they're pretty neat. Also, having put this in before the roll bar, I had to make sure that I had all the room I might need for the bar to still clear. 8s were just the safest choice. I had to really study bars to find one that will work. Ended up getting the GMG roll bar. Can't wait to finally track with racing seats and a harness. Anyway, that's off topic. Yeah... 'cause I had to make sure the bar fit. I could be a wee wee and tell you that weight mattered, but that's not true and silly in my eyes.

You planning on flipping your car sometime soon?

I see all those roll bars on here. I can't seem to figure out why. I haven't seen anyone on here roll their pcar yet.... They do look bad *** though, especially when they're painted to match the exterior. I guess if you want a harness, that's the only way to do it, right?
