18" Drag Radial Comparison...

Tires came in today.
New MT 345/35/18 on the right.
My MH 345/35/18 on the left.
I like the width of the MT much better, but I like the diameter of the MH much better. I'm guessing the MH is more like a 315 ILO a 345.
I'll post a pic later today of the MT mounted vs. the MH mounted to compare the diameter.

Do you have any pics of the '67 Twin Turbo? Since you're in Dallas, you should bring it out sometime.

I'm getting one of these drag radials for my 2002 Ford Lightning and was wondering what your experience has been with the Mickey Thompson drag radials? Was the traction better or worse than the M&H's?

I am currently running Nitto NT555r 305/45R18's and the traction is terrible with my setup.

I would appreciate it!

I run the same tire, great stuff, but I'm trying to move to a 17 for more sidewall.

How much power are you hooking up with?

Edit: Just noticed the date, argh, I hate people who bump threads dead for almost a year.

Big power (twin turbo, high boost S/C) go with the MT's. The Hoosiers are GREAT but the height of the MT and the traction is why I say the MT for big power. This is my opinion. I do know of a S/C viper that went mid to low 9's with a great 60' on the hoosiers though. It depends on the trap speed your car is capable of. If you are under 150 I would probably go with the Hoosier

why if under 150 go with hoosier because they are taller? Snorman cut some great 60's on the 18" hoosiers and boost almighty cut 1.3x on the 17" version.

from your experience, which tire MT or Hoosier would fair better for a daily driven application. The MT's look like they have some type of groove where hoosiers look pretty much like slicks... have you had any of the tires out in the rain by chance? I can only speak from experience on bfg's in the rain as well as the 335 hoosiers but on a different car (Cobra).

thanks for the info though, it really helps... Im ordering tires tomorrow and its between MT and Hoosier... Im leaning MT right now though

The Viper does not have enough RPM capabilities to run on the 26" tall Hoosier tire above 150. The taller 28" MT will allow you to run past that.

As far as daily driven. I wouldn't do it on any drag radial. If you are going to anyway, go with the MT or BFG. The Hoosier is extremely slick with just two grooves cut in it. I have run R6s in the rain and it is not pretty.

Between the two, the Hoosier will be better overall in the dry and I would think the MT would be better in the rain. I like the hoosier stability better at high speed. The MT sidewall is so tall and not reinforced that it makes it a little scary at speed. (Could be the 15lbs of air pressure too)

In other words, they all have their compromises. Hoosier overall except for in the rain, so daily is why it isn't more cut in dry.

How much importance do you guys put on sidewall over width?

I'm considering a 275/40/17 Hoosier over a 305/35/18 MT that I currently run.

f8l, thanks for the insight. I can speak from experience on what you are talking about but with different tires. I have been on 16" MT ET Streets doing roll races on the highway and talk about wobble.

I will probably look at price at this point because Im pretty sure it is a wash with which tire is better overall.

Depends on your rim width. If you are running a small rim you will probably want height. If you can get a wider rim and get more contact patch the wider will be more stable with less side wall height.

This is of course for street driven cars, the taller tire is better for the track. It will absorb some of the energy from the launch and be a little less harsh on the drivetrain. So many factors, gear ratio, rpm in 4th gear and many others.
