I'm thinking of picking one up for a dd. Is the truck pretty reliable for the most part? Known issues? Best year to purchase? Expensive to maintain? Real world mpg you are getting?

Thx

Pros and cons?

Sorry for all these questions just wanted to get your opinion.

Nice SUV - I was headed that way a few years ago but instead ended up with an 06 BMW X5 4.8is which is an amazing vehicle too. Got to test drive the Jeep and loved the torque for sure.

Love the truck, like the poster above, went with an X5 instead though. The way those trucks pull out of the hole is ridiculous though.

Mine hasn't had any serious issues. My mygig is acting strange but I plan on getting that fixed under warranty.

The main issues people complain about are the stock goodyear tires and squeaky rear brakes. The goodyears are known to wear unevenly on the inside of the tire on the fronts. The rear brakes can squeal pretty bad. I've replaced the tires and the brakes and haven't had issues since.

I would get an 08+. They came with a new black interior that looks much nicer. You can also get mygig navigation system and HIDs starting in 2008. I'd recommend getting both of those options.

I think it's relatively cheap to maintain considering what you get for the money. Oil changes can be pricey since it takes a lot of oil and you have to use synthetic. Also the transfer case fluid which needs to be changed at 30k miles is expensive and only available through the dealer. All and all though, it's not going to be more expensive than a euro competitor. It's probably cheaper in fact.

Real world gas mileage is bad but what's worse is the small tank. I probably only get 14 mpg on the highway with my mods (intake, exhaust, custom tune, tstat). Before I had the tune, the best I got was 17 on the highway. I'm probably around 12 in the city. If I were commuting from the burbs every day I would get a different car. The combination of the bad mileage and small tank means you'd have to fill up frequently.

Something to think about is that all indications are that they will be making a SRT version of the new Cherokee that was released this year. No doubt it will be a step up. Everyone seems to think it will come out in 2012. If you can afford it and were planning on buy new, it may be best to wait. If you were planning on buying used, you may also consider waiting to see if the new one will bring down prices on my model. That's your own call though whether you want to wait a whole year.

Good luck with your decision. I DD mine and think it's a great bang for the buck truck. I can carry 5 people, luggage, golf clubs and go to the track and run a 12.9 @105 (my best time to date). I can't think of another DD I'd rather have for under $35k used. Let me know if you have any more questions. I'll be happy to help.

Also, a good resource is cherokeesrt8.com forums.

I have a question. Does the interior rattle in yours alot? I love the SRT8 series, while Jeeps are kinda separate from Dodge, I have found the interior of the SRT8 Charger to not be solid.

Hey nice jeep bro!
I love my '08 also, great trucks for the money.
Are you on the red site?

About the rattles... Nothing rattles on mine, I'm at 25K miles. Only thing that rattles are the other cars when I'm next to them from the sound of my exhaust.

I am on the other site but frequent 6speed more often. I was on here when the SRT Jeep was just a twinkle in Chrysler's eye . I'm a big Porsche fan at heart. Maybe the P car will replace the Jeep in a few years, who knows. Ideally it would be in addition!

Nice, I have a few buddies here and that's how I found out about this site. I love Porsche too, I wish my wife would get the new X5M as her next car, that would make a nice stable mate for the SRT. In a few years I would like to get for myself a '97 Carrera .

I'm going to the track tomorrow night, I have to log in some runs, next week I'll be getting a CMR tune from Johan. My goal is to get a new PB before years end with my current mods. My best so far is a 12.5 @ 106mph, I'm hoping the new tune will get me there. Cam and headers will be next to get me on the low 12s.
Are you doing anything else to yours?

I don't have anything else planned for mine. I have exhaust, intake, cmr tune, and tstat. Best I could get out of it last spring was a 12.98 @ 104.7 w/ a 1.87 60ft. I either can't drive or I have a dog compared to others with the same mods. On the bright side it's extremely consistent, always running 12.9x-13.0x at 104ish mph. Once the weather cools off and work slows to a crawl in November, I'll try again but I'm not terribly optimistic.
