Check engine - need to replace ignition coils
#31
Thanks Irish,
my AML DTC guide gives me codes for the "single cylinder misfire" from P0301 to P0312, so from cylinder 1 to 12 (page 2.72).
When I plug the AMDS to check all DTCs I get 312 code and "misfire cylinder 12"
I am not new to diagnistic equipement (JLR IDS,JEEP DRB / STARSCAN)but discovering the AMDS (also have an old AM WDS)the misfire monitor is to be loaded in the datalogger ?
Yes the misfire is easy to feel.
My AMDS is launch mode V1.02 and update 2.12

Misfire monitor is under the Special Apps icon on AMDS upper buttons..click OBD Monitors then misfire and start...obviously make sure car is running and u will be able to verify the misfire justin real-time in the bar graph display..it will display each cyl misfire counts as it happens...So ur only missing on cyl 12? I assume fuel and air is good...have you done a cyl pressure test and leak down test?

As I live on a remote island with the nearest main dealer 3000 sea miles away I first bought a WDS and after a 4 year search managed to find an AMDS.

Have seen them on eBay..and in auctions from bankrupt dealers..

Ok now I get it, ur missing a large amount of updates...every update needs to be added to get all the correct settings in AMDS, the latest update doesn't include all the past updates in a nutshell..Yah the guide has from P0301 to P0312 which was for WDS and early AMDS release..Nonetheless not important

Misfires can be tricky to diagnose. Is it just a bad plug or/and coil, is it the injector, is it a burnt intake or exhaust valve not sealing..list goes on..9/10 it's a faulty coil and glazed plugs though on DB9...

Pretty sure it's not compression related, after checking all earthing, if no results I will change the coil pack, plugs and the injector n°12 and give the remainings an ultrasonic bath.
Hope to be able to do that before flying to France where I need to change the..........................coils on my DB7V!!!! Before our French Aston Martin Club Nurburgring meeting.

Merci,
yes it is a young club, March 13, but very active, with regulars meetings and friendly weeek ends,we went to GoodWood, Gaydon, NP and lot of local places. Our next gathering of 20 AMs is taking place on the 18/20 of October startin with a visit of the AML Tech Center followed by some track fun to show our, limited, skills and fast autobhan runs.
Finishing in Luxembourg with a drink at the local main dealer and having fun.
Thanks for all the advices, will change all coils, plugs and injector n°12 for peace of mind.Anything worth changing while the manifolds are away?

If I was doing the job ..I'd order a set of injector seals, 12 spark plugs, 12 spark plug coils, 2 intake manifold gaskets...after the job make sure to disconnect the battery for 45 seconds to reset the misfire factors..u will then need AMDS hook up while datalogging "36-1" in the primary and Secondary PCM's, also load up ECT(engine coolant temp)..
You will have to relearn the misfire factors while monitoring the pids in datalogger...engine needs to be 90C or above...keep vehicle in "D" with A/C off and Sport Mode off...on a wide open stretch with no traffic, get up to 110kph and wait for 6th gear to select, release throttle and do not touch brake pedal, steering must be straight and coast till 56kph, now drive back up to 110kph and repeat the coast down till 56kph...look at the datalogger pid 36-1 and see if it has changed color to red...if it has not, repeat the drive cycle again from 110kph back down to 56kph...usually takes me 2-3 tries for the PCM to learn the New misfire factors.....without this learnt, the PCM will not detect a misfire and will run poorly

Great infos Irish,
I will have to invite you to Martinique in the middle of the canadian winter for you to enjoy a rum by the seaside!!!
Will tackle the job on the 9 when back from France, fully trained after having done the 7 coils as a preventiv measure as I have a light "pop" at the exhaust.
Do you kow how I could upgrade my AMDS ?
thanks for all

having done the plugs and coils on the DB7V in about 8 hours I am now ready to sort out the DB9 ones.No more pop at the exhaust, very easy to do but for those bl**dy scews on the side of the manifolds, engineers,as usual , have no ideas of what is a spanner as they think the car they conceive will never need to be fixed!

1/4inch air rachet and swivel sockets does the trick on the evap solinoids and valve bolts for the old school V12's
The newer V12's like the DB9 have gone away with the valves and solinoid bracket that was attached to the intake..just don't forget the vacuum hoses at the back of the intake..also small trick to get the rearward bolts out of the intake with out struggling..hehe do you see it
