The thing to remember about this car was that the guiding principle and ethos throughout its development and manufacturer was that no surface in this car was to be treated as a "B" surface.

That is to say things that you can not see nor touch. Everything was design as an "A" surface where you can see it or not. Screws tightened to the head slots all face in the same direction. And entire exhaust redesigned instead of hack - reroute because of clearance concerns. etc. etc.

Why would you want to.
You want music, push the key in the start slot.
You want more volume, push down on the accelerator.

Car has fabulous details, any one of which is pure art. Unfortunately the car as a whole is not. It is very disjointed, front to rear. Especially the rear, which looks as if they were trying to hide dually wheels.

This is a car which looks great at very close range (meaning looking at the details). From a distance, it is an aesthetic failure.

There were supposedly only two or three bought in the US. Since they aren't crash testing them, they are being imported as "show cars" and can't be driven on the streets.

I have to agree as to the rear quarter panels/rear wings. It is an abrupt transition from the door skins to the rear wheels, and I'm not sure it really works. The Vanq has a similar abrupt transition, which I feel that Aston "fixed" with the DBS and Vantage.

Exactly. Those sharp transitions don't work at all. Ever look at side photos of the 1-77? You get a certain color/reflection from the doors forward and from the rear of the door to the back you get a whole different color/shade. Very bad for continuity. Makes it look like a grafted on kit. Why on earth did they feel it necessary to widen the back so drastically? The Vanquish was bad enough with the bulge in the door panel, but the 1-77 is simply over the top.

Looking directly at the rear, it looks pretty good. You figure it must be just a very wide car, then you see it from the front where it has more or less normal width. Two different cars front and back...and a lousy transition in between.

A new suit of clothes

You guys have nailed it. 1-77, fabulous details, weak exterior execution. Just the opposite of all the other AM Gaydon products.

A Jaguar engineering executive once expressed how ugly he thought the VH Aston cars were under the skin. With all those common parts and straight lined extrusions sized to perform their maximum task he was right. If you view the Gaydon cutaway or any one of them with its bumper fascias removed you probably agree.

So what the 1-77 needs is to take its wonderful internals, the powertrain, suspension, tub and interior, illustrated in the brianja photos above, in all its leather, polished aluminum and carbon fibreness and marry them to an equally well conceived and developed exterior. 1-77 needs a freshly tailored suit of clothes.

My vote, the Jaguar concept that's been in the automotive press since last year's Paris Show, the C-X75. Let Jag keep their motive bits, Tata jet powered at first, now a turboed 4 hybrid with a big battery pack and an electric motor at each wheel. All I want is the skin...Ian Callum come on down, er back, to AM.
