I installed the catch can tonite. Pretty trivial task to do, really. My car has a whopping 180 miles now and it already had some oil in the hose. I decided to use some stainless steel cable ties instead of the plastic zip ties for a more professional and OEM look. If you didn't know the catch can wasn't standard equipment, you would never guess so by looking at the results. Telum01 did a wonderful job with this kit.

A mechanic buddy of mine (who is admittedly OCD when it comes to working on vehicles) mentioned the zip ties as well. What I've seen with people I've talked and have seen the kit in person to is that the vast majority don't notice them or don't care. I was thinking about finding some clamps or something to use instead but it seems like a non-issue for most people. KF had his alternative in mind, and my buddy had a completely different alternative. So it seems the best way to proceed is to continue with the zip ties and let people change them out based on their taste.

 

Going through threads to update the FAQ thread and got to this one. A couple quick things:

For those of you running a catch can, don't forget to drain it every once in a while! I'd recommend at least once a year for a car not driven too often. Once every month or two if you drive a lot. I do mine once every month or two during driving seasons and once during the winter.

The other thing is I was hoping to put catch cans on some race cars, particularly the GT4. Turns out they already run them! Some key takeaways from the GT4:

The OCCs (oil catch cans) on the GT4 are vented, so they have an air filter that vents to atmosphere. This is a big no-no for emissions purposes (race cars are for off-road use only so it's fine for them).
Second, the OCC on the GT4 is positioned in a spot where electronics are mounted on the production street cars.

To compare the setup I designed vs the one on the N24/GT4 (same on both cars, I'll just say GT4 since that's the current one)... I'm not 100% certain whether or not the GT4 has an air-oil separator (AOS) like the production street car, but I'll assume it does so it's directly relatable to our cars.

I've stated it before, as has Stuart, but stating it again for full transparency: The OCC kit I designed is now being sold through VelocityAP.

The GT4 has the OCC prior to the AOS, so the OCC collects oil before it gets to the AOS.
The VelocityAP kit has the OCC after the AOS, so the OCC collects oil that has gotten past the AOS.

The functional difference should be that the GT4 OCC collects more oil but less oil is returned to the oil supply, as that function is performed by the AOS.

The VelocityAP kit collects oil that the AOS failed to capture, so it should collect less in the OCC but more will be returned to the oil supply via the AOS. That makes the VelocityAP setup lower maintenance as there is less oil to drain. It is also fully enclosed (rather than vented like the GT4 OCC), so there is no change to the original design of the engine - all it does is add an extra means of capturing oil vapors.

 

Telum/Stuart, Finishing the annual service on my 07 Vantage yesterday, my last task was draining the Catch Can. The car had been in winter hibernation since last fall and I had forgotten about your part/system I had installed.

I was surprised by the oz. or so the Catch Can caught and retained. Can not tell specifically how many miles this represents, but it's something less than my total 3,000 last year.

It is hard to believe the original equipment hardware had been pumping that dark brown gunk into the intake manifold air stream.

 

Thanks for posting about it! It's pretty wild, isn't it? Hard to imagine that oil getting into the intake manifold like that but seeing is definitely believing!

I installed this catch can last week - fantastic product!

While doing do, I was reminded of something and wanted to ask you all...

My dealer recently suggested performing a "throttle body service" ($99) on my Vantage. I assume that is to clean out the muck in the throttle body from the breather tubes (2 of them, it appears) feeding back into the accordion tube leading into the throttle body.

Does this catch can help prevent the need for this throttle body cleaning service (I assume not)? Or, is that something still necessary due to the fact the catch can does not address the other pre-throttle body tubes?

I'm not sure if it helps with the throttle body. I'll try to tear mine open tomorrow and take a look at it. Off the top of my head I'm assuming the catch can won't help because it's post-throttle body.

BTW, I did an oil change also this last weekend and drained my catch can. 7 months and 3750 miles, and about 1/3 cup drained out-with some still remaining in the can as the fitting is not at the bottom.

Friendly reminder to drain your oil catch cans!

I spent a couple hours in my sweltering hot garage doing maintenance on my 4Runner and decided to drain the catch can on my Aston while I was at it. Figured I'd snap a quick vid of it. This was after just ~2k miles.
