DB9 Conv Roof Module Replaced...still not working
Hello, all...
I have an '06 DB9 Volante. I began to have the classic CRM failure problems about a month ago (spastic gauges and turn signals; no brake lights; paddle failure; roof failure).
1) I removed the CRM and all functions except the roof returned to normal, except for the boot not opening.
2) I ordered a replacement CRM (brand new, latest version) and installed it. All non-roof functions worked fine and the boot worked properly. The roof still wouldn't work, so I assumed that I needed a re-flash.
3) Took the car to the nearest AM dealer (a 3.5 hour drive each way) for a re-flash.
4) Like an idiot, didn't try the roof before leaving the dealer. Got home and the roof still didn't work.
5) Checked the pump and CRM fuses...both fine.
I'm ASSUMING that the technician would have known if the re-flash didn't "take." I'm also assuming...perhaps incorrectly...that if I didn't have the harnesses and plugs properly connected to the new CRM that the re-flash wouldn't have registered.
Any thoughts? The service manager at the dealer said he didn't know if the technician checked the roof function before releasing the car back to me.
I'm probably going to take the new CRM out and put the old one back in to see if there's any change (the original problems typically occurred on hot days after the car had been running for a while). It's a fairly miserable job, however, as the left-rear wheel well cover has to come out and the wiring loom is too short to allow the unit to be removed and reinstalled without a struggle.

Today I removed the new CRM and re-installed the old one. The car was cool and in my garage.
1) The roof operated properly, as did all other functions. This was not a total surprise, as the original CRM fault was intermittent and seemed to correspond to high temperature conditions.
2) As the old CRM was unreliable and failed often, I removed it again and reinstalled the new CRM.
3) After reinstallation of the new CRM, the roof no longer operated.
I assume that this means that the re-flash performed by the dealer was not successful...

You don't need to buy a spare "in case" the CRM goes bad, but if you have an early car you may want to proactively replace it (it'll cost about $600 all-in for the latest version if you shop around).
I understand that it's just a matter of time before they fail. Mine started getting unreliable at around 9 years.
The problem is that it's not a roadside repair. You have to remove the left rear road wheel, remove the arch liner, unbolt the cover hatch, and unplug the two connectors to the CRM.
After you do that everything will work properly except the convertible roof: you don't need a replacement module until you need to open the roof again.
I've heard some people claim that people with small hands and long arms can reach in through the boot to remove the connectors without going in through the wheel arch. Mine were held in place with factory zip ties, so that wouldn't have worked even if I could open my trunk.
Still, it's difficult to persuade oneself to proactively replace something that seems to be working fine...

Update:
I've re-programmed the windows several times and driven the car regularly to run through a few cycles of everything. Everything works fine except for the roof. I've removed the new CRM and replaced the old one again, and the roof continues to work with the old unit (but I'm sure it won't when it gets hot).
I emailed the dealer's service advisor on Saturday 7/2 and he said he'd call me. On Thursday, 7/7 he still hadn't called, so I called him.
He said that it was basically my fault because I just wanted the CRM flashed instead of a full job, but he confirmed that the tech never checked the roof after the programming.
I can't take the car in for the next three weeks because of my schedule, so he suggested that I use their trucking service to get the car to them (at a cost of $300). He said that he wouldn't charge me for labor if a new flash fixed the problem, but I'd still have to pay for the transport. And if it needed more diagnostics or work, I'd be on the hook for it.
He did say that he'll ask his boss to split the transport cost with me and call me back.
My concern is that I'm pretty sure that the first re-program wasn't done right, so I'm not confident that the new one will be. It's kind of a helpless feeling...

That's bad. Full job of flashing the CRM should Includes checking to make sure CRM is functional that means it operates the roof. I think it's their fault and they should pick up the cost of transport and give you free car wash and wax as well.
What's the purpose of CRM? To operate the roof and what's the purpose of flashing the CRM ? So it will work with the car and will do what it's suppose to do.
I think they messed up on flash, I believe if you put brand new unflashe module it will do what your so called "flashed module" is doing.
Where is this dealer what's their name, if you have another dealer in similar distance then tell them they will loose you as customer because of such irresponsible behavior.

Once you remove the plate holding the CRM PULL it down and stick your fingers to dislodge loom (it's tucked in and due to multiple wires it kind of holds the curved shape) and then pull down on CRM that will allow almost 6-8 inch of extra wire

Update
The dealer failed to successfully flash the new module and said it's a defective part. They replaced my new module with one they had on hand, and everything has worked well since then!

I paid $80 for flashing
If they ask for more negotiate it down
It does not take more than 2-3 min to flash it
So ask them what is their hourly rate and say you will pay for half hr at most
