When you sell a company they dont bring you a brinks truck full of cash. 220 million in VC funding over 8 years. i was one of 5 founders and we did well by our employeers and got 600 of them two year buy outs of safety nets so they could continue working.

as ive siad many times, i never had money, technically i still dont. i had to pay so much in taxes that i didnt have im leveraged beyond belief. I have a lot of nice things because i was paid well along the way but that 11m in a fixed escrow account and the line of credit opened against it is what im living off of. I simply have a broken aston that i didnt want to pay 2x for, to put it in context i shared some terrible moments with cars that already happened this year where im in the hole a couple hundred k on cars as its is. If you had half a brain and listened to any of the projects i worked on and looked up large software company sales this past year it would take about 5 minutes to figure out what company i started, and being the only one from cincinnati it would not be hard to guess which one i am since everyone else is Israeli. Ok, let's get back to the car. I realize the loss of an engine can be emotional for some but it would be helpful if you just focus on the Aston Martin engine issue and not introduce other vehicles or personal matters. I'm very interested in what happened moreso as opposed to finding parts you need. Really, until you know what broke and how it broke there is no point ordering camshafts, rod bearings and the like cause you have no idea what you need to replace.

Somewhere in this thread you made mention of a different viscosity of oil. What was it and why was that put in? I'd also like to know if you had a catch can on this or any other mods and have you ever experienced the timing cover leak. Do you have a maintenance log for the vehicle that you can post? Also photos of the drained oil and although you looked at the oil filter cut the thing open and look to see if there is metal jammed in the paper folds.

I'm also confused as a couple of your posts infer that you've started the engine after this event. Is that correct?

If you want to start inspecting I'd start looking at these two pump and the chain that drives them.

We put in 10w 60 oil because its what the manual recommended. It was very different than what was in the car when i bought it, i dont know how they could tell as i only know so much but they said it had a 10or20 w 40 more than likely. pure speculation.

I dont have pictures of the oil collected but my mechanic does and i can get them from him monday. he said it was not much but from reflection of lights i the garage some was present

I had the log book with every service documented however there are no details about what they did. It came from Aston Martin Coral gables or one of the locations in that area and they would check the box and write in annual service, 10k service, the car was driven so little they did one of the major services of injectors, belts, plugs and coils at 8k miles because it was on the 75000 mile - year interval. I had it inspected. there and i had a 7 day return when it got here and both mechanics said it was an amazing example needing tires which we discussed so i wasnt caught off guard. the owner bought 7 original keys and checked every option when he bought it, he traded it in for a DBS. Ive called an petitioned the records from those visits and they have been very weird about it. they asked how to know i own the car and i asked however you need - registration, photo id, me next to the car, facetime with my face and id next to the VIN, they said we would need you to come here with the car. im not driving 20 hours to florida so there does seem something off color there but the end result was a clean car that arrived in top nick and drove great for months.

I heard a sound and pulled over. The mechanic had it sit for a day, drained half the oil, topped it back off to see if anything leaked - no signs of it doing so now and unless they cleaned it amazingly well no signs of any leaks in the past. I dont know if he removed the oil filter or not but he said several ties the oil filter had nothing to do with this. he topped if off, let it work its way through the system and wanted to try to start the car for a couple seconds after seeing oil had made its way to the top just to see if there were error messages or diagnostic codes. started right up like normal, same noise but no vibrations or anything else off, it was on for 3-4 seconds and he said his computer had pulled enough data - across the board healthy. compression, lamba sensors, engine knock name it all within spec.

The car came stock and i did not do any updates other than cosmetic. No catch can, regretting that, and other than once a month to check fluid levels i never opened the hood. No mods, and not trusting the historical records i decided to just start using exactly what the factory recommended going forward - except i used a certified Aston mechanic and not a deal since thats 250 miles away.

From the little i know about cars and the weaknesses of this one i am guessing the pump on the front right was not feeding enough of the new oil to the top end because it was failing or adapting strangely to the different oil. I looked at the filter, felt it and examined it from all sides - assuming it didnt have a cap needing removing and they screwed it on blocked then i dont think its a filter issue. Also the car did run for 30 minutes post oil change, i took it for an hour drive the next day and i was 30 minutes into one a day or two later when this happened. Another area that seems strange to me - id think that would be enough time where if it didnt like the oil it would have given some indication by then so an oil pump that was on its way out and took a 10 second time out logically makes sense, i dont know if they actually do that though.

it ran at idle for 30 minutes to make sure things were working their way though. it was shipped back to cincinnati and i flew home. When i got home i drove an hour that day, and was half way into a drive when i heard a noise and shut it off.

mechanic takes possession - he has worked on many of these and all of my cars. he is very good and would never risk something as he stands by his actions and if he made anything worse he would insist on paying out of pocket. my family has 20 years with him. He wanted to do some basic investigate so he did a visual, then released some oil, observed trace amounts of metal but could say from where, refilled the oil and had a tech standing over the hood to see and hear if anything was going sideways, hooked it up to the Aston diagnostic computer and did a start up which rapidly fired, held normal idle and when the system said it had read all sensors he shut it off. 4-5 seconds with the engine running but not in movement at the wheel. Visual inspection nothing, computers nothing, engine operation perfect. No mods by original owner or myself - i added a bluetooth streaming adaptor to the aux input - doubt its relevant

I wish i had more i could provide but for the past two weeks ive been getting the we dont know and waiting to hear back anytime i check in. This mechanic would tear into it if it made sense but something is holding him back, he says just being cautious which i respect but im not very patient so i want to sell it off or get to building. stalling and getting it back as winter hits and goes into storage would suck and i have yet to see an angle where a rebuild makes sense so it looks like finding a buyer for the car or its parts is where we go. once he agrees we can find out what what but he wanted me to think on it because one we do down that path its one direction from there and im saying goodbye to the car (or paying a ton later ro revive it)

That was more of less the plan if this took off when it started. I cant prove this because it goes to fast and i dont hear it until its gone but in fact by neighbor who does live about 2000 yards away has a black carbon fiber color 4 seater helicopter. Ive never met him, he has privacy signs everywhere and a little cyber stalking has got me far enough to see that the property, title, deeds, anything with a paper or money trial is in the name of a non descriptive trust with an attorney listed as POA and executor. As someone who likes pursuing random things discovering who this person is with a house 2x the size of mine and 2 guest houses next to a pool and helipad where the covering slides over top of the chopper so you dont need it pulled - he might be the coolest man in the world. I see his kids and grandkids driving back to them so he isnt a recluse but must have done something well and enjoys his privacy so ill respect that. I have to say i had been here a week and a helicopter went across my line of site to the river about 200 yards away from my 3rd floor windows. it scared the hell out of me. He flys its 2-3x a week alwaus in the direction of one of two neary bye airports then is back in 15 minutes. i think its his version of a retirement car so he goes to get gas and flys home. Average house hold income in my township is 31k, we are right at the intersection of indiana oh and ky so below me on the river has become one of the largest heroine trafficing locations in the country. we had local cops uncover two semi trucks with 300 kilos in each. they stop for gas and its been flooding our community.

As mentioned i dont have 11, i have 11 in company stock at a fixed price when. it was purchased and frozen in escrow. im quite broke between now and the 18 month escrow requirements. I dont eat cheese and think there is not a single bottle of wine worth over 25 bucks. i like scotch, bourbon, or guiness. Ill drink a keystone or a Hudy if its cold and thats whats on tap.

Of the 11 3 has been pledged to local parks, swim clubs, basketball courts, rehab centers, police and the local school distrcit so ill end up with 8.

I never liked working and saw a play where if i worked really hard i could make it a sprint not a marathon. i took it and it worked out better than expected. it was a lottery ticket and i figured out how much i needed for my wife and i to retire and live modest lives with some nice cars and the bi annual exotic trip and she has a great job too so i retired, she wants to work at Proctor until she is 50 or so. ill need 5 to go into investments and get me to my retirement number at 62 when i can draw from it, and i have personally 3 milion left to carry me those years inbetween.

I shovel neighbors driveways when their punk teenagers i though would offer to do mine for 20 bucks. the community i live in has not had an assessment in 5 years as ive asked to cover it because it hasnt been a buge ammount. i like near a UPS driver, a Reserve officer, an accountant. They are all kind welcoming people and it brings me a lot of happiness to see a street where people treat eachother like they should. they value family and it reminds me of how i grew up. Looking at a bank account had never made me happy, i am good with finance. saw what it could do to people and decided when i got my sum how much i needed to have a by all means life of comfort but put myself on a budget just like a salary until i can touch the money i need for later and based that on when. i was making good money but it still had some value. over a certain amount i create problems and lose focus on whats important so before i got it i looked at the people around me, thought how could i make their day a little bit better -just a margin but across the board and i gave away a 3 million dollar grant to a pretty poor township. It came through as a promisory note through a trust, only the city council members know as they had to for tax and donation purposes but no one will ever know what i did, why or how these services that were grossly run down are suddenly given a new life.

Can i be an *** - daily. I was born feeling entitled for no reason and its hard to keep that in check when you have something to brag about. Im not saying this to get anyone to like me or think thats a great guy after all. im saying it because to me - this is what everyone should do if they find themselves in a position to do so. We live in a society and if things are not provided for people its a social contract that we should care for those unable to do so themselves. The engine and oil pressure relief valve is meant to run on 10w60 so I doubt very much the correct oil in it now contributed to an oil starvation issue. How do you know what was in it before you bought it? You say 10w20 or 10w40 - why do you think that? Well hopefully your mechanic saved the original drained oil before he contaminated what is left by topping it up since an analysis of the oil that's left in it will now be skewed. You are believing there was oil starvation to the upper valve-train area - why? Are there noises from that area - it's quite easy to scope both areas. I'd be removing both pumps and checking the lubrication system is operational with no blockages.

I think your mechanic should have drained all the oil for examination & analysis and also to measure the exact volume that was in place. He could of replaced it for further diagnosing and testing. My 4.3 has two scavenger filters that would trap debris returned to the sump housing beneath the windage tray - what does the 4.7 have to replace those?


Edit: Ok I'm done here - this has turned into a soap. Good luck OP. Please post the technical results of the cause of the "failure" and what parts (if any) sustained damage when you find out. I wouldn't hold out for any AML support, judging by the support they have provided the thousands of owners with shrinking dash board leather, failed tail lights, failed head lights, failed clutches, failed timing cover gaskets etc.

 

monday im going to have it taken apart, it limits our options though the factory or dealer rebuilds but they dont have options at retail that sound attractive. 15% change things need some sorting but dodged a bullet and maybe this is a flush and light machining fix, doubtful

OEM were going tor crazy prices on ebay and i started calling the largest dealers and on the seoncd call i got ahold of a place that had a matching in box set and said they had been back there for years. 48 bucks which included shipping. I gae 60 to overnight them.

Are you still flying to Boston? I'd just install that salvage 4.7 and then sell off whatever you want of the original. It's definitely going to be your cheapest option and end up making several grand off your core.
