Smile 2006 A4 or 2004 S4?? New MEMBER!

Hi guys!
First of all I would like to say that I love the information this forum has to offer! I am currently a student and looking at a new DD. I have been looking at 2004 s4's and 2006 a4's. Any advise? Both cars would have around 60,000 miles.
Thanks!

Well, I have had both---all three actually I had an 04 ultra sport 1.8t (now called s-line), had an 06 A4 premium for the wife 2.0t, and had an 05 s4 6mt. I will say as a daily driver the s4 is horrible on gas. If you don't care---go with it! It was an awesome car---kind of a sleeper since most people don't know what they are packing under the hood, and I love the wrap of the recaros. However, my daily commuter was an 04 ultrasport. If you haven't heard of them---do some research...you can get smoking deals on them too and they are great on gas--looks like an s4 (yet more of a true aero package). They 1.8t was a little sluggish for spirited driving but def. a fun stylish commuter. The 2.0t by the way---awesome upgrade from the 1.8t much more zippy...they make an s-line package in these as well.

B6 body style = 1.8t's have lifetime turbo replacement if you buy a cpo'd car.
B7 body style = Key fobs are a huge issue...I'm sure there is a thread about this.

**both...Audi recalled coil packs...get them replaced for free at the dealer.

Good luck in your search!

Thanks guys, so they are pretty fun, reliable cars? Does Audi have an "Audi Roadside Assistance" program like Benz and BMW? I also am aware that the timing belt would have to be changed in the a4 models.
Thanks again!

Yes, Audi does have a roadside program---not sure the details...car was reliable for my duration of ownership. Only thing that ever goes on the v8 s4's is the serp. belt. Typically around 70k miles...mine went at 68k. Audi wanted 1200 to fix...went to my shop and it was 300. Belt is 20 bucks or so...labor was what Audi wanted. Good luck with the search!

Congrats! Make sure you check out an ECU tune...best bang for your buck to make it an "enjoyable" DD. APR seems to be the popular among Audi/VW. They go on sale from time to time, so be on the look out.

I just picked up a B7 A4 3 weeks ago and I've been pretty happy with it. I just ordered Koni Sport Shocks to go with H&R springs, APR Stage 2 tune and a 034 Motorsports High Flow Cat. When I get the Cat installed I'll be right around 270 HP and 310 Torque. With the 93 octane APR tune I was able to get a 5.8 0-60 and with the HFC I'll be right around 5.6-5.7.

Have the cam follower checked regularly, after you are out of warranty. Google it and you'll see what I mean.

I've owned both as well, and as a college student I would lean towards the turbo (Smart choice on the A4). My 05 S4 was actually a B7, and I averaged well under 20 mpg. You could tune it, plenty of bolt-ons on the market to make it sporty. A4 gets my vote!

Great car! Picked up a B7 S4 for myself last week, and I absolutely love it....gas isn't really much of an issue for me even though I've used almost 3/4 of a tank in almost 3 days
