2008 Audi S5 with APR Stage III Supercharger kit
We met the owner of this '08 S5 during an Audi track event. After a day of playing on the track he came over to us to start talking of ways to improve the S5 on the track and the road. After kicking around a few ideas and with a grin our customer said to order the Stage 3 Supercharger kit from APR. Due to the amount of added power and torque we also upgraded the stock clutch to a DXD clutch. We also replaced the front and rear rubber brake hoses with a set of stainless-steel braided lines.
Parts Installed:
APR Stage 3 Supercharger Kit
DXD Clutch
Steel Brake Lines
After parts arrived and the S5 was dropped off at the shop it was time to start staging this S5 up and ripping it apart.
Entire APR Stage 3 Supercharger Kit placed on a work-table, ready to get started.
The heart of the Stage 3 kit is the supercharger itself.
The process starts by removing the bumper and getting the car into service mode:
Next up, the stock intake manifold is removed
Once we removed the intake manifold, we found a high level of carbon build-up. This car had ~70k miles on it and its a common problem on DFI cars.
Here is a close-up of the valves & vane
Close-up of the valves with the vane removed.
The carbon build-up is a problem and will restrict airflow. We went ahead and started the carbon clean-up process.
A pair of air vanes, one partially cleaned and the other, still original.
Cleaning completed on one of the vanes.
Moving onto the valves, we start by cleaning each cylinder individually
Clean valves on cylinder 1
One cylinder at a time. We rotate the crank until both valves on the cylinder are closed. We tape off the other cylinders to keep any debris from getting into the engine. We then introduce solvents into the valve chamber and clean the affected valves and area with dentistry tools. The solvents and debris are sucked out of the cylinder resulting in a nice clean set of valves.
With the valves clean, we proceeded with the supercharger install.
Comparison: The whole upper black portion of the APR Supercharger is a water to air intercooler
Slipping the supercharger onto the engine
Supercharger installed
Heat ex-changer for the water to air intercoolers made into the Supercharger
Water Pump Mounted
Heat ex-changer in place with bumper on,which didn't have to be modified.
Stage 3 Kit install completed.
After working up top it was time to dive under the car and change the clutch and the brake lines. This clutch disc increases the torque capacity to 559lb/ft.
The exhaust had to come down
Driveshaft unhooked. Time to drop the beefy transmission mount.
Transmission out of the chassis
Transmission Out
OEM Pressure Plate
Out with the old disc and in with the new
Transmission back in
Final phase - brake lines
Old lines
New Lines
So what does all this work equal out to? The system puts down just shy of an extra 150hp....to the ground!!!
Final Step was to add our signature GMP colored lettering
