Thinking of getting an 01 S4

I'm thinking about getting an 01 S4; however, I can't stand the way that they feel. The steering feels just terrible and the shifter is the same. I love everything else about them. Do you guys know what will make them feel more connected like a M3? I just felt like I was driving a turck when I drove the S4, there was so much play in the steering wheel. Other than that I love the cars. What suspension upgrades might help this?

Andrew,

While I do not share your complaints of the S4, having driven numerous E36s and having owned an E46, my current S4 configuration runs circles around both of them in terms of handling.

You'll want the CPP tie rods and control arms, dialed in with a bit of negative camber, a good shock and spring setup is sufficient, and a UUC motorworks or B&M short shifter along with fresh transmission fluid does wonder.

S4 has a terrific aftermarket and offers tremendous potential.

Or if you've got even more money to throw at it, the Motorsport coilovers are even better!

How hard is it to get 290-300 AWHP out of a 01.5+ B5 S4?

They are very good looking in Nogaro or Imola. I think it would make a great DD/fun car.

no TOO hard. Chip, exhaust, intake. i don't think you'd need turbos to get that kind of HP.

for the original question. stasis susp, sways (if you want), short shifter, drive train stabilizer will make massive differences. If you really want to get into it, you can get adjustable upper links for the susp.

It's a highly moddable car, with a reputation of high maintenance/turbo instability--I have no firsthand experience, but the true Audiheads disagree.
One of my close friends has a highly modded widebody conversion 2002 S4 pushing out 490AWHP...it's a beast.
Marcus, any mods on your 2.0t? My Dolphin Grey came a few nights ago.

The stock turbos are garbage. It's not an "if" they blow question, but a "when". If you put K04's in when they blow though (they're more reliable anyways), watch out - you've got a 380-400+hp monster on your hands.

Stealth - for your 2.0 - chip it. That gives you an instant 50hp!

Swede,
Believe me, a chip is 1st on the todo list. APR stock/91/93.
Th
e hard part now is deciding what mods to put on next--I was thinking:
-Stoptech SS brake lines
-AMS shortshifter

-Milltek catback exhaust
-H-sport sways
-S4 door blades
(not to thread hijack, my apologies, I'll make my own thread soon!)

sounds like you'll be pretty set up.
Hsport sways are awesome and the milltek sounds like it's the way to go for sure.

Don't forget to change the pads on the car. The stock ones suck.

Listen to Marcus. I'm running a VAST SS, AWE drivetrain stabilizer, STASIS streetsports, H&R rear sway, and fresh tranny fluid. All that plus my other RS4 upgrades and I love the car to death and its a MONSTER. And mad swami you're right - brakes suck. Hopefully my front rear pads/rotors/fluid get here before I go to Chicago.

Yea Marcus, our trip was delayed about 6 weeks. :-)

You can get 315hp and 365 lbs of torque with a REVO Chip, that is alot of freakin torque, and if you have some money left over, get a ko4 turbo upgrade, go with APR TUNING or AWE, you can also get a custom ecu tune which might bring out more hp.
