new RS4; oil consumption at 500 miles
have been reading some of the oil consumption posts and just yesterday had to drop by the local dealership for something unrelated. before leaving, the service manager asks "have you checked your oil yet? we're trying to monitor/chart oil consumption on these cars....we'd love it if you could take down some readings here in the early goings....."
so home i went. let the car cool for a few hours....low and behold? MIN. double checked that i had wiped the dipstick clean and sure enough another MIN. i was absolutely shocked as the car has less than 500 miles on it. went straight to the auto supply store to purchase some more Castrol SynTec for the time being.
funny part about it was when my wife asked me why i was adding more oil to my brand new car. i answered with "hun, this thing was built by Quattro GmbH, that's why."

Shouldn't let the car cool. Check your manual. For proper oil levels, engine should be at operating temperature, at least 150F degrees I think (could be 120F). Turn off engine, wait 2-3 minutes to let oil settle back down. Then check the level with the dipstick. You don't want to overfill the car. But the RS4 will consume oil for about the first 5,000 - 10,000 miles, no worries. Cheers!

With 436 miles on the clock of my new RS4, the level on the dipstick is just in the middle between Min and Max. According to the handbook I can add about 1/2 quart at this time. Seems normal for this engine.

definalty normal around the world.
here in new zealand a friends avant went through a bucketload of oil during the "break in" ( yea right, we redlined it out of the dealership ) they also used different oil up untill the 1000km mark, then drained it and added different oil. they explained why but i cant remember. we were to eager to get it off the lot.
