I always wondered the same thing. It has a lot to do with them being the last air cooled.

 

993's are collector items, especially the 993 Twin Turbos! The last of the air-cooled engines along with small production numbers compared to the 996.
68,029 993's were built between 93-98.

 

Edmunds TMV and KBB are now trending down a bit (perhaps reflecting sales from earlier in the year when the economy was weaker). A low mileage (<20k) '01 private party in clean condition is now quoted at around $42k, while excellent condition (a high bar to hit) tops out at $44k. The Manheim figures mostly mirror that (but obviously at wholesale prices).

Still, many sellers are well above those numbers.

 

not to mention the 993 has more of a classic shape. the 996 look like ice cubes and the dash sux, imho. the 997 has reverted back to the classic look. 996 cars will likely be bunched with the 74-77 2.7 cars as far as collectibility.

i'm gonna pile drive it into the ground as a daily....

 

Viper's have a similar history. You routinely see 1997's going for the same or close to the same price as 2004's!!

 

Completely agree with that. All of my Viper's sustained their value, if not went up in price.

In regard to 996 TT's, would everyone agree to them being a lot of fun to drive and them being outstanding daily drivers?

 

Lt. Dan, you can't go wrong with a TT Frog for a daily, just make sure to have a ppi done and make sure it doesn't have an issue with 2nd gear pop out.

This second gear pop out is something I am going to look at later today when I see the car.

For the room - when do the TT 911's start to show their age as far as mechanical's??? If a car has 50k or 60k miles on an 2001/2002, is that significant? As far as average miles driven, it isn't really a lot.

Would really like your opinions.

where do you guys see tt prices bottoming? for a car that was once 125k, i just dont see a clean example going less than 25k. but i could be wrong

 

If they ever go that low I'll buy another one just to have around or keep it at my winter home but I don't think they will ever go that low for a car in reasonably decent shape.

 

Just got back from driving the one I went to look at. Seemed to have "history", not sure what, but things just didn't seem right. He had the MAF sensor disconnected on the top of the airbox, which nearly lit every light on the dash (check engine, PSM, etc), is that normal?

The brake calipers were faded as well, thought that was strange. Might have been in the sun A LOT.

Price $35k.

I guess, keep on searching.

 

I think I read the calipers discolor from track use where they may overheat.

 

Depends on what you consider a 'bottom'. The last few months haven't moved much after quite a drop in the winter and spring. Next drop is likely to start this month as we get into fall/winter, and then again when the updated 997 turbo goes on sale. The 997 turbo prices are really dropping now, which will start to compress the high end of the 996 turbo market.

Soooooo, what you are saying is that the sky is falling and I should wait more? Ugh!

I am thinking that the 996 TT platform will sustain a price point in this and/or near this mark. It makes sense for at least another 4 to 5 years when the 997's will have come down due to the next generation. The 993 TT's have sustained a higher price point for obvious reasons which in a weird way I would think would help the 996 sustain its current cost/value.
