I think the numbers are that about 35% were manual, and between '87 and '91 only 28% had limited slip; both things you eventually want. That means 10% of the 928 S4s sold in the US were 5 speed with lsd... If you also want sport seats (maybe 20% at best) you are at 2%. '87 automatics with open differential are easy to find, and most S4s will need a ton and half of catch up maintenance that will exhaust your patience and cost far more than you paid for the car...if you can even find a good 928 mechanic.
All the '93-'95 had "PSD" computer controlled limited slip. The old style clutch pack LSD is no maintenance and feels normal when driven hard.

The '90+ had a low mounted external oil cooler that is vulnerable to damage also.

The '87-'88 had a 2.20 rear end that gives the car a great 5th gear for the highway, 2400 rpm at 80 mph while the '89-'95 5 speeds had 2.73 for a buzzy 3200 rpm at 80 mph. I have driven both and much prefer the 2.20. The 5 liter V8 has plenty of torque and doesn't need to rev at cruise.

The 928 community is a tight group of addicts, and working on the cars is actually not bad. The best mechanic is the owner always.

If a buyer was local, I would offer a 5 year warrantee on labor; that would let me see the car and I enjoy working on it.

This is my 6th 928, and I tried to just improve on some of the car's weak areas and do all the maintenance to make it 100% reliable and 100% functional.
928s have fairly soft suspension, too little rubber on the road (7 and 8" wheels), too much front brake bias, and are too muffled. A short shifter and some other little bits help too.

This is one of the few 928s for sale anywhere that is not a maintenance pit, that can be driven, washed and driven again. 99 out of 100 pretty 928s for sale out there will have little to no service records, and even dealership work can't be trusted. Having a proper timing belt job is essential, and many techs just throw a new belt on and that's it...
Every '87+ 928 will need:
-new motor mounts
-oil pan and valve cover gaskets
-the LH computer rebuilt
-oil cooler lines and power steering hoses
-a/c rebuilt
-shocks and springs
-a new radiator
-new steering rack or zf rebuilt
-new clutch master, blue hose and slave cylinder
-new fuses and relays
-new shifter ball cup
-everything under the hood apart and back together with new gaskets, WOT switch, hall sensor, knock sensors, MAF rebuilt or replaced, plugs, plug wires, caps rotors, coils, coil wires, belts, hoses and heater valve.

This is what every '87+ will need now or very soon, and there is a lot of labor involved in doing it all.

Once the go- round is done, you have an excellent GT car that will not need the same maintenance for 100K miles, only a timing belt every 40K. These cars are really overbuilt, and do not need to be babied. A person would have to spend a day driving a good one to see how good they are, but most cars will not give the best impression because of a lack of maintenance.
A 928 is a lot more complex than the air cooled 911s of the period. I do think they are great cars though, and once you have had one you will be back for another.

Great write-up on the car. I love these cars but am always put off by some of the maintenance horror stories I've heard over the years. It's nice to see one that's about as perfect as you can get at this point.

Still for sale.
My buyer had second thoughts with his daughter in college and the 928 money really tight. I sent his money back.
