cuz now no one has any clue how many real miles are on it. It could have been driven 10k miles with the broken odometer.

Why wouldn't the new odometer be reset to the correct mileage. I know in porsche, the dealer when replacing the speedo cluster will set it to the correct mileage. And it must be done within I think 100 miles on the cluster or it's permanent. I would think on a car as expensive as a lambo they would have done something similar.

for all the odometer questions. When an odo is replaced it starts from ZERO and the mileage it was replaced at is permanently documented on the wall of the driver's side door on a tag.

Why wouldn't they on a 200k+ car just have someone fix it correctly and put the right mileage on the odo. Any speedometer repair shop can do it legally if you have the proper documentation.

Say for instance, the odo showed 2,500 miles and then broke. You could have potentially put on another 10K from that point before you took it to get replaced. However, the door tag would say 2,500 since that what it got stuck at. 10K basically undocumented miles.
It may be actual in this case, but not all are as honest, hence the loss of value.

I believe high end cars have computer chips in various areas of the car which record mileage even when the odo is broken. A friend had a BMW which he bought used and when he went in for service the dealer plugged in a computer and he told him 6 chips said the mileage was 20K more than the odo was reading. Aparantly someone rolled it back and was not aware that the computer was still recording the actual miles. He got his money back from the selling dealer a year later.

What Steve is saying is that it could have been driven 10,000 miles with the odometer stuck, adn then brought it in to be fixed.
