For Sale: 996 3.6L (2002) Engine Core
Unopened, new in box! Ok, that's a joke... it's clearly not new. =)
The 2002 3.6 996 engine had 80k miles on it before seizing. It does come with it's very own Porsche Shipping Crate. The engine has an an X51 oil baffle, deep sump spacer, and oil pickup spacer installed. As the crank case has not been opened up, we have no idea exactly why it does not turn, but strongly suspect an intermediate shaft bearing failure lead to some timing chains slipping (which the sound it made before letting go seemed to indicate). Note, the engine is a non-X51 - so it makes a perfect core for exchange with Porsche North America someone looking to upgrade or replace a 2001 or older 3.2L 996 engine, or upgrade a 986 Boxster motor.
The PNA core return charge is currently about $2600. So, I presume the value of this motor is less than that to a would be upgrader. I'd take any offer around $1000 for it. You'd get around $400 in 1 week old (literally) X51 baffle and deep sump spacers for free with that. The engine is located in the norcal (san jose) area. Shipping by freight would cost a few hundred, so bay area folk will benefit more. Please *email* me with offers or questions. Thanks!
I'll upload pictures shortly.
UPDATE: previous buyer not heard from, so engine is not sold as indicated below. Those of you who previously expressed interest, please do contact me with offers. Thanks!

Just added some pictures, and wanted to clarify a few things for those who've been asking in PM. Sorry for the poor picture quality. Only had a camera-phone on hand.
The engine includes everything a new crate engine would include, including intake manifold and exhaust manifold. It does not include things that a crate motor doesn't have, like the air-filter box, clutch, and I believe the AC compressor pump. (Not certain about the last one on that list. I can double check for someone if needed.)
The mileage was about 83k, and the motor was running fantastically , right up until it stopped turning. =) It's biggest value of course, is as a core return to PNA, who will pay $2600 for it to someone who's buying a new (re-manufactured) 996 3.6 crate motor, if the crank case remains sealed, as it is currently.
