Locked Inside!

Locked Inside!
Hello
My Wife and Son drove my 1995 Continental GT this morning and when they arrived at their destination could not open the doors from within. I know that the locking system locks my car when you exceed a certain speed on driving away and that you have to pull the door handle twice to open the door. They pulled their handles many times and the doors wouldn't open. It really scared them. Eventually my Son suggested switching the engine back on and this allowed the doors to open.
Can anyone explain how this might happen? Its typical that it would happen when they are using the car, which is quite rare.
Do I need a Dealer to switch off the auto-locking or is there some user method at all please.
Thank you.

Thanks for the replies.
My Wife was using an ordinary key, not keyless. I'll ask if my Son could have possibly pressed the lock button twice. I don't think so though because they didn't even know that there were lock/unlock buttons beside the handle which they could have tried.

Wow, that really sounds like the car was deadlocked. I would imagine that the deadlock is disabled when the car is running for safety reasons... obviously shouldn't be able to trap someone inside a running/driving car.
If there was no resistance when pulling the handle (the handle felt disconnected--ie deadlocked) that's almost certainly what happened. If the double lock wasn't pushed, hopefully there is just a problem with a relay (ie those gold relays used everywhere such as under the right hand side knee-roll). The ECUs for these systems can also become problematic with age. May be worth disabling the feature at the dealer if you can't replicate the problem/solution readily.
Good luck!
