First Gen Continental GT Pre-Purchase Questions

I did my own inspection before the actual PPI, but I realized that it is so difficult to know what is "the normal and right behavior" vs "its broken". Couple of questions about 2006 Bentley CGT (and unfortunately the previous owner also does not have the owners manual anymore):

A) Is the trunk supposed to just automatically flip up or do you have to push it up yourself with considerable force? Is there supposed to be soft-close on the trunk?

B) Is the hood supposed to just automatically flip up or do you have to push it up yourself with considerable force?

C) Passenger soft close sometimes works and sometimes does not work. The owner said that it is the battery which is running really low and needs reset. Is that the case? Would a well charged battery allows the soft-close to work properly again? Any reset procedures?

D) Massage function (on driver's side) and lumbar adjustment (on both sides) seems to be broken. Massage on passenger side is also extremely weak. Is this possibly related to a weak battery or fuse or the motor/seat has to be replaced?

E) The car has the Mulliner package. Should it have the Jewel Fuel Filler Cap?

F) Turn signals are completely silent! Is it supposed to be as such? Is there a setting somewhere, or is something broken?

G) There are no door chimes, etc (when door open, no seatbelt, etc.). Is it supposed to be silent or a setting or broken parts?

H) 2006 has a bluetooth option? How do I know whether it is included? Is there AUX for 2006?

I) Couple of panels and buttons just come off when I pull it. On 2 other 2005s, those don't come off. Anyone has the same issue where they just come off? (see attached)

J) Headline seems to start sagging already, but doesn't really bother me now. Will it sag until it is really bad (and maybe fall off) or it just sags in the middle?

K) The front and rear Bentley emblem looks like it has moisture/bubbles in it. It almost looks like it was due to sun and water? (Unfortunately I do not have a photo). The other 2005s I saw had solid black/dark background for the B. Anyone else's emblem looks dirty/bubbly? Anyone knows how much to replace them?

Any other things I should look out for in a 2006? (I asked about the vacuum hissing sound on another thread: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...nental-gt.html)

Thanks a lot!

A) My trunk lid rises automatically when I lift the release button in the in the driver's door or push the "B" badge on the trunk lid. I push the button on the trunk lid edge and the trunk lowers and soft closes
B) The hood rises automatically after manually lifting it a short ways
C) Don't know about resets but a low battery will cause non essential functions to shut down in a priority sequence to preserve power for more essential functions. Low battery will also throw all kinds of strange codes
D) No idea
E) Mulliner package does not include Jewel Gas Cap
F) My turn signals are silent -- never gave it much thought --don't like the click, click, click on some cars anyway
G) Never noticed chimes or no chimes
H) Mine has Bluetooth -- don't know how to detect. Ask owner if he uses phone for handsfree and autodial. Other members may know how to detect or viability of aux units
I) Never had buttons become loose or fall off. Everything seems over engineered -- ***** and pulls seem like chrome plated metal and not plastic
J) My headliner has been sagging in the center over the rear seats for 3 years and has not gotten worse. I'll get it fixed when convenient to leave the car for a few days. About $500 I think -- other members may weigh in with their experiences
K) My emblems are blemish free --they seem like pocelain but may be hard resin/plastic. They are not just decorative but functional in releasing hood/trunk so may be expensive but I have no knowledge of cost

Does owner have service records -- the condition of some of the things you describe may be an indication of poor maintenance but you would be the best judge of that having actually inspected the car. Owner may not be original if he has no manual. Some owner's handbooks or complete sets end up on ebay for $200 to $500. If you have not already inspected others, a
suggestion would be to look at least one more to make a comparison

On the bonnet/hood, the "B" button is a plastic laminate on metal cap. I suspect the bubbles are a result of temperature change. You can buy the replacement cap for the hood "B" for about $50.00 (CDN). You will need a heat gun and a little patience to pry off the old one. Make sure you make a protective sleeve cut-out to hold the button out while you work on it. This will also help prevent you from blistering the hood paint with the heat gun.

The new one comes pre-glued and ready for application. Take your time because if you don't line up the replacement, the button won't line up with the wings when the button retreats.

I don't know about the boot/trunk "B" button.

Great DIY pre-inspection. If possible you might request the seller to have these issues inspected. You did find many issues that might be of concern and expensive. Sounds like the trunk and hood shock supports are failing. I would suggest that you consider looking at other B sales for comparison. Check and see if the parking sensors front and rear function, and if the Navigation works. When you first turn on the ignition to start does the dash panel state service? this will be and indication for now needed service. An oil change will bite the wallet as well as some of the required scheduled mileage services.
If you find the one you want you will really enjoy the ownership.

The rest of the car looks really well maintained. Leather, and overall interior are much better than the other 2 2005s I've seen. The outside paint is well preserved and very few dings.

The owner does regular oil changes when necessary. In the past 2 years, he did replace one TPMS and got 2 sets of new batteries. He uses a Indy for servicing.

I will still have a PPI done, just wanted to clarify what's the right "behavior" so some of these scenarios, and what are expected wear & tear.

Thanks for the sensors suggestions. I didn't test much of the infotainment system yet.

Having recently bought a 2006 myself, some answers

A) Is the trunk supposed to just automatically flip up or do you have to push it up yourself with considerable force? Is there supposed to be soft-close on the trunk?

You should not have to push

B) Is the hood supposed to just automatically flip up or do you have to push it up yourself with considerable force?

It doesn't lift itself, but lift easlily and once up, it should stay put.

C) Passenger soft close sometimes works and sometimes does not work. The owner said that it is the battery which is running really low and needs reset. Is that the case? Would a well charged battery allows the soft-close to work properly again? Any reset procedures?

Not sure, Try hooking up a jump pack or charger (see instructions in manual for how to hook up... driver side - and passenger side + I believe) to see if that helps.

F) Turn signals are completely silent! Is it supposed to be as such? Is there a setting somewhere, or is something broken?

Mine make a nice ticking noise I can clearly hear at stop lights. Sounds like an actual relay click, as opposed to sounds through speakers, so make sure radio is off.

G) There are no door chimes, etc (when door open, no seatbelt, etc.). Is it supposed to be silent or a setting or broken parts?

I don't get any door chimes either, unless there is a problem.

H) 2006 has a bluetooth option? How do I know whether it is included? Is there AUX for 2006?

Look under the drivers side armrest and you should see a ****/screen for connecting to bluetooth.

I) Couple of panels and buttons just come off when I pull it. On 2 other 2005s, those don't come off. Anyone has the same issue where they just come off? (see attached)

I haven't seen this and sounds like someone has broken the tabs tinkering with it or replacing the part.

Haven't seen a dirty/bubbly emblem. Should be dark, shiny and clear. Sounds like someone has peeled the plastic badge part off the 'wings' for some reason and tried to re-apply them. Looks like between $80-200 for the part online, however some may not be OEM and exact size. Would suggest you get at the dealer or a reputable salvager.

My 2008 CGT has Bentley “B†icons on hood and trunk with the wear & tear like how yours are described. I attribute to Florida sun.. I ordered new OEM ones from Flying Spares and replaced mine.

Crazy that the emblems on a Bentley are not enamel. They are on Astons.

On my Arnage everything was metal/alloy and of the highest quality. On the CGT, which was the first of the VW generation cars - the grill became made of shiny plastic instead of metal along with various other parts starting to be cost engineered. Yes, it’s a bummer.
