I am new to the Forum. I just posted a new thread. I'm considering purchasing a 2006 Flying Spur that appears to be in excellent condition. Approximately 30000 miles. Is this an issue that I could potentially run into on the Flying Spur, or was this issue strictly on the coupe and convertible models?

Hello Barry,

The plastic lines over the transmission were on the early GT'S and GTC's, But all the GT'S, GTC's, along with the Flying Spur can and do suffer from the plastic lines along the firewall failing, but that is not an engine out job, it is a steering rack out job.

I just had the engine out for something else and had them replace the lines with stainless. It was quote at 30 hours of labor to pull the engine, the stainless lines were $1,500. So $4,000 or so to get to them, then $1,500 to change them to the good lines, so maybe $5k or $6k all-in. The $13k at the beginning of the thread is off by a factor of three.

Also, it's totally obvious when there is a big leak, it simply won't idle right, it jumps a couple hundred rpm. One of the lines came loose after the repair and it started happening and I went, "Oh, so that's why this needs to get replaced". The tech popped the connector all the way home and it went back to a smooth idle.

Everyone talks about the smoke test, you probably don't need one if the idle is terrible, it's probably the vacuum line. They all go bad eventually it looks like.

Thanks so much, Johnny! I read over your entire "project" post and I'll I can say is... wow. You are extremely talented.

Unfortunately, I lack your talent. So any work will need to be done by a good indy shop if I decide to move forward on this 2006 spur.

Anything else I should be on the lookout for prior to pulling the trigger?

Besides the obvious check to see if any of the front suspension has been replaced. Air struts, control arms, axles, etc

FWIW: I'll suggest I've come-up with one positive aspect to this vacuum line leaking issue, and that is: I've wanted a two post lift for... oh... a couple of decades... except I didn't have enough of a really good reason to justify all that was involved with making it happen... that is till I got my 2004 GT... which I've ascertained is suffering from the ubiquitous vacuum leak issue. So facing the reality of the situation that there's really only two choices: either get a 2 post lift so I can pull the motor, or sell the vehicle... I went with getting the lift... even though it was a costly and involved project... and I had a tough time accepting the fact that a vehicle that cost somewhere around $150K new with only 40 some-odd thousand miles of use would need the motor pulled to fix something as ignorant as a vacuum line leak... blah, blah, blah. Anyhoo: The lift is installed as-of a week or so ago, and I'm thrilled with it. Admittedly I haven't had the 2004 GT even close to the lift... yet... but I'm catching up on all sorts of other "to-do list" maintenance items I've been avoiding. And as far as king of the mountain bragging rights go: The two post lift seems to be the envy of the area... it was a primary topic of conversation a few days ago during the local fireman's pancake feed.

So there's something.

Hello @Dg 27 ,
Are you saying, "yes" you had it done, or are you just agreeing that it is a bad design ?

@Dg 27 ,
I am guessing by this question that you have not had the work done..

The starter is not $100, it is $470 to $570 depending on where you shop, 2 listings below, as far as the quoted $13000.00 that is absurd, the job for the vacuum lines can be done in the range of $3500-$5000 depending on your local Bentley indy, and a little higher depending on what else you decide to have replaced while you are in there, the starter is an engine out job, and requires further disassembly of the engine by way of removing the passenger side (USA) turbo charger to access the starter.
