Advice on aftermarket Double-Din Radio (Ben Hur) and radar detector

Just purchased a 2005 GT and one of the first tasks I'm going to undertake is to either do it myself, or have a sound shop put in a Ben Hur replacement entertainment unit. I have to choose a "double-din" radio head. I'm a bit of a radio snob from my high school days, when Kenwood was junk and Alpine was in the Lamborghinis, but I don't know if that was really just branding. Alpine is my first choice I imagine, but I really want the best one. I am an Apple guy, so I want Carplay and I don't care about on-unit navigation, or maybe I do. Have any of you upgraded to a top-end radio? Which one would you recommend?

I also had a boss when I was a teen that had a radar detector installed and it was great...I want the same thing. What's the best radar detector? K40? Has anyone installed one in their car and have a good review?

I almost bought a Maserati instead, but I just couldn't deal with the old radio and nav system. My other car is hyper-modern, with haptics in the seat and lane sensing, auto-braking...I like the older cars but anyone who uses bluetooth knows that you can't comfortably go backwards.

Lastly, speaking of bluetooth, do I want to skip the whole radio thing and just go with a cheap bluetooth module? Or is that too dated now too?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
I have an 06 and did the Ben Hur myself and it’s fairly easy to do. Search around because when I was looking to do mines they were $2500. I think I seen one for $1500 a month or two ago but I really wasn’t paying attention so don’t quote me. Some think it’s nasty looking but for me it was all about adding more functionality to the car. Also adding XM radio, placing the antenna is a PITA. I don’t want to put a shark fin on the car so I’m looking for something low profile so I find myself looking at every car at a stop light to see the style they have.

If you see a deal, let me know. I've been searching and I can buy it from the manufacturer for $2,100 plus shipping, which is cheaper than $2,500 but is probably three-week lead time. I won't be adding XM, I use a music streaming service on my iPhone, and yes, I'm pretty wary about pulling down the headliner. Did you set up a backup camera? And does it have a USB input? I imagine that is reliant on what head to buy. What did you chose?

Yes, I installed a backup camera. Also pretty straight forward once you get the bottom left back seat out(just the side of the car I ran it on once I got to the back). I actually took the front and rear centers out then cut to the left side. I had to take out all the old Alpine stuff the previous owner had in there.

I have a Kenwood in there. Yes it has usb and hdmi inputs. With most of the newer units you can change the splash screens, which I put a Bentley logo on mines(typical).

Just take your time and study each brand you like and each model they have. I’m sure you’ll find something to fit your needs.

I hesitate to admit this, but I haven't taken possession of the car yet. I wanted a couple things sorted out and it's having the headliner repaired. I'm planning on going with the Ben Hur and either the Alpine or the Kenwood, I haven't decided. I need to think through what I want done with usb/lightning connector. I'm thinking of having a lightning to HDMI adapter behind the radio and run the lightning cable to the armrest. That way I could play video from the iphone on the screen. I could also have a USB adapter for carplay. Haven't thought it all through yet.

One funny thought I had was to purchase a digital tv reciever for the radio so I could watch tv on the screen. I honestly have zero interest in watching tv on the screen, but I think it would be a totally interesting little option to show people, or maybe to watch some tv while parked.

Does anyone know if the HDMI input gets inhibited while moving?

The car stereo place I chose has experience in Bentleys and told me that they recently got a telephone-operated remote-start to work after a huge amount of effort and time, but now they know how to do it...I want it. But if it's crazy expensive, I don't need it.

No real definitive answer about the radar detector; sounds like all that are "hidden" are about $1,000, which seems about three times as expensive as it needs to be (same for the BEN HUR).

I bet I'm about a month away from getting it all done.

Does anyone use Lojack anymore? I live in the city and car jacking is real, here. If it happened, I would want them caught immediately, but I don't think that's worth the $700. Any suggestions?

The HDMI works while moving. With the BEN HUR if I remember correctly you just have to hook up a wire from the radio (I think it’s just a ground). I ran mines to the glove box after I took out the cd changer and navigation units and just sit my other phone (it’s not on, just used for media) on the trays the units sat in.

Don’t have any answer to your other questions.

Any recommendations? Im thinking pull the center panel, recheck and push in all the plug ins. but I dont know what that buzzing sound would be coming from. any info would be greatly appreciated. thx in advance folks.

Angry Buzz video

sorry I sound pissed but you can hear it at the beginning of the video, sometimes it goes off then after about 10-15 seconds comes back on. The engine can be off but you can still hear it with accessories running. turning off the stereo does not cut out the sound.

Email info@navtv.com and they're usually super-fast at getting back to you with tech support. It looks like your power connection is whacked. Don't know what's making the bzzzzt sound, but I don't like it.

MMI is terrible. There are replacements out there, much brighter but sacrifice some functionality. For mine, I just put a CD changer emulator for better variety sound. My screen is still very dim and terrible for standards. I am very interested in all products I have seen, enhancing the user experience. This being said, I love my GT for what it is.
