You're kidding!...well as long as it's balanced. Well, with dual just about everything it's starting to make sense.

I have disabled DOD on a few C7 Vettes for owners not able to tolerate it. No experience with it at all on new W12s.

DOD is managed in the EMS usually under fuel>lean fuel>DOD

But NOT to confuse Dave's issue. He still does not have DOD on his MY, nor is it close to his issues with the trans.

And a torque model had to be slightly modified in DOD air mass

Hi Dav,

Sorry, you cannot check the 6HP fluid level very easily. The process is more complex than this, but essentially, you need to raise and level the car. start the engine, trans needs to warm of to a specified temperature and with the fill plug removed (while engine is running VERY IMPORTANT), the fluid will begin to drip out the fill hole.

There are more steps than this. If you really want to attempt it I can list the more detailed process.

Thanks. I thought that would be the case! Any idea how much an oil change / topup cost from dealer or indie?

thanks

Depends where you go and what fluid they use. ZF insists that lifeguard 6 be used (as they own royalties here and refuse to certify and endorse any other fluid, but I know Mercon SP works). Lifeguard 6 can be $50/qt if you're in the US; Mercon SP is about $6/qt. Next if you're going to do this on an 04 you should change the filter as you're so close to that changing the oil.

Probably getting too detailed here. But with Lifeguard 6 shops could charge in the range of $400 - $700 USD.

here is the more complete process. I've done a number of 6HP26s and 28s both on a lift and on jackstands. This is a DANGEROUS DIY and not for the novice. The following is BMW, but many cars from the mid 2000s used the 6HP - BMW, Jaguar, Hyundai, some Fords, The process is the same. I also only use a temp probe in the fluid itself. Some use an IR gun on the trans case which is terribly inaccurate.

BMW 6HP26 – 6HP28 Transmission fluid level procedures

Back to FAQ

1) The transmission fluid temperature must be between 30°C and 35°C before checking can begin. Use test equipment to determine the trans temperature.
2) The vehicle must be level with engine running at idle speed and air conditioning turned on.
3) Step on the brakes firmly, apply parking brake fully and shift to D and R, briefly pausing in each position before shifting back to the Park position.
4) With the engine running at idle speed and the selector in Park position, remove the filler plug. Monitor the transmission temperature, if a small stream of oil runs out at 40°C, the fluid level is correct.
5) If no oil runs out when the filler plug is removed, the fluid level is too low and oil needs to be added until it overflows.
6) With engine running, install the oil filler plug and tighten to proper torque.

1) With the engine stopped and the transmission in Park position, remove the oil filler plug. Add transmission fluid until a small stream of oil runs out.
2) Insert the filler plug and tighten by hand. Start the engine.
3) With the engine running, remove the oil filler plug and add transmission fluid until a small stream of oil runs out. Insert the filler plug and tighten by hand.
4) Follow the “Transmission fluid level checking” procedure described in section A) above.

1) Use only ZF-LifeguardFluid6 or OE approved transmission fluid.
2) If the transmission temperature rises above 50°C during the fluid level checking procedure the resulting oil level will be to low. Let the transmission cool down and repeat the fluid level procedure.
3) Have transmission fluid and a suitable oil pump available before starting the fluid level procedure. The transmission fluid temperature will rise quickly during the checking procedure.

  • A) Transmissions fluid level checking.
  • B) Adding fluid after repairs.
  • C) Notes on fluid level and adding procedure.
  • D) Drain and filler plug location.

BTW - I am NOT endorsing or recommending Mercon SP as a replacement for Lifeguard 6!....before I get a legion of angry members raining down on me...LOL...
