Powder-coated rims and left wheel bearing
Very interesting development in my Blue Bentley ongoing saga. I got the car back from the shop and it drove with a howl that was new. I wrote about that earlier, it ended up being a left front wheel bearing. Weird timing after the engine was out, but it is what it is. I took it back for the wheel bearing and they offered to send out the rims for powder coating (I mentioned I was planning on doing it, they did it for the same price). At least one of my rims was bent and needed to be straightened.
Anyway, I get it back and OMG it is a different car! It used to hunt all over on crowned roads, if it was a three-lane highway with a crown in the middle, in the left lane it would pull a little to the left, in the right lane, it would pull a little to the right, in the center lane it would track almost normally.
I figured that was just a Bentley thing, part of the weight and the all-wheel-drive or whatever.
Nope, it was a combination of the rims and wheel bearing. Now that all the wheels are straight and balanced and the wheel bearing replaced, it drives like an absolute dream.
I can really tell the difference. So for anyone who is thinking about re-doing their rims, it's cheap (I think $175 per) and I really think the balancing and straightening on a fifteen year-old car makes a huge difference.
Lastly, check your left-front wheel bearing. While researching on this board, I found several people who had to replace it, so I suspect that's like the vacuum lines, it probably goes out on cars at a certain age. Just the left front.
Now that I've replaced my plugs and both wastegate contollers, the car feels much faster as well, I did that second-gear pedal-to-the-metal hole shot and damn if this car didn't just up and get going. It was always fast, but it feels like it's been refreshed.
Knock on wood, no check engine light, been driving it about 200 miles.
