Continental GT Options and questions

Hi everyone.

Been lurking for a while as I seek to educate myself before (all things being equal) moving into a Bentley.

I'm sort of struggling to understand what options were specced on these cars (or what was standard fitment, or what has been aftermarket). Can anyone help?

Likely looking at a Speed version (so I think that's going to be an '08MY in the UK

1) Phone integration? Bluetooth? I've seen phones in arm rests, but was the BT a specced add on or did it become standard? Does the BT connection allow streaming of music / Sat Nav sounds?
2) iPod control? Does it exist?
3) Reversing camera? Again, I've seen *one* advert that showed it, but no idea if it was an aftermarket.

Any other options that I should regard as imperative?

Gearshift paddles: Do any alternatives exist? On my test drive I found them quite small.

Finally is there an owner's handbook on line at all?

Many thanks in advance

There is a list of option codes. These are printed in the service manual and on a label on the car. Have a google for them. I will see if I can find a link in the mean time.

There is a complete list of codes, but its for a VAG cars! Useful for finding what options are fitted to a car, if you have sight of the label/service book. Not found a list of possible options though.

Thanks Rich!

I was rather hoping to get an idea of what options I should be looking for on any given car (preferably from the ads), so really about the, phone integration, the iPod, the paddles, the camera.

Do these things even exist as options (short of 3rd party). I not, I won't even try to limit my search, but if they do, some would be preferable. For example the Maserati GT early versions have no Bluetooth or USB connectivity into the stereo or phone. Later ones do.

Make sense?

Cheers

Yes I know what you mean. Not sure if there is a list of all options available for specific years. If you can get the seller to post a photo of the options label off the car, you can look them all up!

The bluetooth and audio options are a bit limited from 04 to 11. Not sure if 2011 onwards is any better. My 09 just has a cable to plug in an ipod or a usb memory stick to play mp3s. It can select tracks etc but its not smart enough to display track or album names - that would be just too difficult for Bentley!

I think everyone just puts in a better 3rd party product or, even better, put in a complete car pc (android etc)...

The cables for ipod, aux in, etc are options I think.

Other options I can think of, off the top of my head: Massage seats. Aux heater (warms car up before engine starts). TV (usless as it was analogue). Reverse camera. (nice to have). Garage door opener buttons.

No idea if there are any other more exotic options like fridges etc. 2011 cars have much more modern infotainment system and stuff like adaptive cruise.

Thanks you're a gent!

So looks like the only one I care about would be the camera and aim for BT. Although I'd consider upgrading everything anyway (never had a car that I couldn't fit a Parrot to!)

Thanks again!

No problem. I've only just got mine so still learning.
What year car are you looking for?
You know about all the Bentley 'issues' I assume?

Looking for a Speed which I think puts it post 2008 (and conveniently post the vacuum over the transmission issues)

Have read at some depth the PDF that's available. All really good. Fundamentally coming from Maseratis, you've got to be sensible about what these things are going to cost. So warranty or dealer, and a war chest!

Cheers

Cars from 2004 to 2010 (2011 if you have a Supersports) have the same head unit with really only 2 options and very minor add ons.

- The audio head units look the same, but there was an upgraded package called NAIM (its spotty on whether they are much better).
- The add ons in later years were BT and rear camera (I think this was an option). I can confirm that BT is phone only - it does not support streaming music,

Make no mistake, these head units are terrible. If not for their integration into basic systems in the car, are essentially bricks. They are circa 2003 and akin to the calculator watch...dated and annoying except for perhaps the nostalgia factor.

I have a 2010 Supersports and my head unit is sitting in a box on a shelf because I swapped it all out with the BEN-HUR system....which is MUCH better.

Heated steering wheel is an option. I have that and find it useful a few times a year. If I lived in cold northern country I'd say it is a must. But of course you can substitute gloves.

There are provisions for headlight washers but my car is not fitted. Also I do not have provisions for a front license plate.

Other features I have from 2008 that may or may not be options:
  • Massaging seats (only the backs, not the bottoms)
  • Seat heaters
  • Bentley phone (useless)
  • Rear camera
  • Navigation (very basic)
  • Lifetime Sirrus satellite radio - Great!
  • 20" wheels (19" was standard)
  • Parking Distance alarm
  • Electric folding mirrors (not auto - manually operated)
  • Auto and manual adjustable ride height
  • Adjustable ride quality
  • Auto and manual deployable rear wing
  • Soft close doors
  • Chrome grilles
  • Electric boot lid
  • Bespoke upholstery stitching
  • Engine turned dash panel inserts (in lieu of wood)
  • Memory seats (no easy enter/exit feature though)
  • Auto HVAC system
  • Auto windscreen wipers
  • Floor mats
  • Built in battery charger
  • Bluetooth (iPhone pairs easily)
I use the paddle shifters all the time and find them plenty big. Unlike my Corvette and wife's Audi TT they do not turn with the wheel. Once you get used to where they are its very easy to use that feature. In fact I prefer they don't turn.

I think the only optional equipment in the 2005 Continental was the Mulliner package (quilted leather, some upgraded interior bits and fancier wheels - although I prefer the standard wheel myself) and an option for one or two different wheels including the Mulliner wheel without the rest of the package. I think everything else was standard.

Extended woods in the doors and rear area I think were an option along with massaging seats + heated S wheel .
The rest I understand is std ?

The Mulliner thing was actually a pragmatic marketing con , they quickly introduced circa 2005 .
The total extended wood was std in the launch modals 2004 but basically cost too many man hrs to do so much .
They couldn’t keep up the production line because the wood guys took so long , it held up the line .

Cleverly they cut the std wood to just the front dash two + centre console.......this saved a huge amount of time and thus costs and enabled a [ insert your own % increase in line speed to meet demand ]

To get customers to buy it they tossed in the Mulliner pack .
std cars from 2005 ish had plain leather insets in the doors and rear arm rest / centre console etc .Even the so called “ quilted “ leather inserts cost chicken feed relatively to the original woods . Any body off the street with 1hr on the sowing machine training could knock out the “ quilted “ insets .

Remember the VAG culture re the emissions scandal, they did not get away with that but seemingly the Bentley GT fraternity are still mugged by the “Mulliner “ spec .

Smart Germans or dumb Germans or both ? Top brass @ Crewe are German btw .

Wheels are just supply items cheap to do from there wheel section for the whole VAG range so don’t hang your hat on different wheels costs them 0.02 p to change .Remember they fit VW caddy vans ......yeh really special.....right !
