CGT 2005 BT Module upgrade from 3W0035385H to 3W0035385AT

Hi, I know there are lots of threads on this particular topic but they are a little confusing having read through them as to the solutoin.

I have a 2005 CGT with a 3W0035385H dated 20.07.06. And an arm rest cluster as pictured below. I have purchased a 3W0035385AT dated 2009-10-13 as pictured.
When I install the new unit I get no function from the arm rest display and the head unit displays 'SIM not inserted'

So obviously not compatible but need to understand which element needs to be changed for me to be able to Bluetooth a modern phone to the car.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Arm rest configuration

Original BT unit

Head Unit error message

Updated BT unit from the USA

Hello @Littlj01 ,
It appears that your 2005 has had a BT module upgrade or replacement, as it has a date of July 20 2006, BUT that is not the issue here, after I read your message earlier today I went and pulled my dash apart again, I can't believe I did it, after I just had it apart for the NAV DVD thread, but I had to know the answer for you and all others with 2003-05, and maybe some 06 units, as in my 2005 GT that I put everything electrical into from the 2006 parts car, that infotainment head unit had a date of "04/06" so the 4th week of 06, with a software version of "S0253" and a HW version of "20", that 2006 head unit worked with the "AT" BT module to pair my Galaxy S7 that the original 2006 BT module would not connect to properly, so today day I swapped in the same infotainment unit I used to test the DVD NAV operation this past Sunday, that unit has a date of "50/04" so the 50th week of 2004, and that unit has a software level of "S0223" and a HW number of "19", and that unit does exactly as what you have going on, shows no sim..
So it has to be the early units are missing something in the SW or the HW, do you have a scan to show the info of your head unit ?
And not to add to more confusion, I also had a unit from the 9th week of 2006 with a SW of "S0251" and a HW of "20", so lower then the 4th week....

If you do not have a scan, I will get you the button pushing sequence to get the info.

Johnny

Here are the instructions for retrieving the software level on screen.
I am very curious as to the SW level in your head unit, as for you to have the armrest setup like that, meaning your right side armrest with the dial and screen, your head unit should have the proper SW. did that rotary **** and screen work prior to you swapping the BT box?

Just so I repeat it again and it is fully understood, when using the "AT" BT module the privacy phone and the rotary **** / screen along with the SIM card slot become obsolete, and nothing is needed in either armrest for the BT to function as hand free, as shown in my videos on my rebuild thread, now of course one could fit the newer armrest inserts into both for the newer privacy phone in one, ant the SIM card slot in the other, but first you got to have the proper head unit, and remember if you go to far up year wise you will run into CD VS. DVD NAV drive unit, that's why I went all 2010 for the infotainment head unit, DVD NAV drive, and BT module .

Johnny,

Thank you so much for coming back to me. I'm sorry you had to pull the insides of your car out again nightmare.
It's very interesting to find out the car at some point has had an upgrade. I thought it strange that me BT unit was newer than the car.
Below are the software readings following your instructions. I've included the SatNav as well just in case. Must say the numbers don't mean anything to me.
Hope this helps to get to the bottom. I'm happy to lose the functionality of the arm rests if I can pair my mobile phone with the car and still use the steering wheel functions.

Hi Johnny
Do you remember a few weeks back we exchanged some posts on this subject.
I had exactly the same problem as Littlj1 with the AT module.
At the time I concluded that my headunit was the culprit. Being an old unit with an old software(0223) it couldn't operate with the newer AT module. So I decided to look for software upgrades for the headunit. I ordered a updater CD-Rom from Bentley with a newer (0251) software. However I was never able to make my headunit accept it.
In the end I gave up and last month I found an used JNV035394 module selling on the other side of the world, in Australia. I bought it, fitted it and "voilá" I finally have my 2005 CGT paring with my iphone X with all functions available both on the headunit and on the steering wheel. the only snag being it only accepts a list of the first 250 contacts truncating all the others.
I now have a spare AT module to sell. If anyone is interested?

sspeeder, thanks for the input. So are you saying if I buy a JNV035394 and change out the 3W0035385AT it will work with my current 2005 head unit?

Are the connection the same on the JNV035394?

Many thanks

James

Head unit software level
Hello @Littlj01 James,
So you have SW level 0251, "S0251" and apparently that level does not work, just like the older S0223 does not, yet the 253 "S0253" from the 4th week of 2006 in the 2006 infotainment head unit does work, so it's the 2003-05 and any 2006 unit with the SW 0251 that will not work.

In my case I did not know of the "AT" BT module at the time, I had not dug in deep enough yet, and I was not going to spend $850-$900 on just the JNV unit at the time from Flying Spur's just to get BT phone working on a 2006 infotainment head unit that did not have the "SR" button for satellite radio, no DVD NAV system, no "MM" button for multi media input, no "RVC" rear view camera, etc. Plus having the old antiquated one button privacy handset, and rotary ****/screen in the armrests.

So I purchased a 2010 (dated 01/10, HW 03, SW2270) head unit at $900, the "AT" BT module at $140, the DVD NAV drive at $500, the RVC module at $150, the Sirius SAT module with lifetime membership at $100, the multi media module and cable at $120, two complete armrests with inserts at $210, and the new privacy phone at $120, So all in at $2120.00
Now of course I found that the 2010 head unit i purchased was a NAIM for Bentley unit, so I picked the NAIM amplifier at $800.00

So I'm just a few versions unlucky. Shame. Thanks for the confirmation. I'm like you unlikely to splash out on the JNV035394. Too expensive for just Bluetooth.

I will refit the old unit and sell the AT unit. At least the digital TV tuner upgrade worked, so I'm happy with that. As always appreciate your help.

Johnny,

I've fitted the old Bluetooth unit back in the car and I keep getting this message 'Telephone not available'. I've tried disconnecting the battery for 1 minutes. Disconnecting and reconnecting the unit cables. But each time I start the car I get this message.

Is there any sequence I need to follow to get the head unit to like the old unit again?

Thanks James

Hi Littlj1
Yes, the bluetooth module JNV035394 works flawlessly with my 2005 headunit with software 0223, no problem.
I guess I was lucky to find this module in Australia selling for 90.00 euros, and this was why I didn't even blink.
On the other hand I was bought the DTV module to swap for my analogic one originally fitted in my CGT, but because I have this old headunit with software 0223, I cannot make it to run. I also tried to upgrade the headunit to the 0251 software but somehow I could not have my headunit to accept the upgrade. So no digital TV for me as yet.
These are really very complicated machines but in the end I think I am getting addicted to these challenges. Crazy stuff this is.

Yes know what you mean. It looks like the modules and software were moving all the time during the production period of the car. I was able to successfully upgrade to digital TV but didn't quite make it for Bluetooth. You got your module for a good price.

Which module? the Bluetooth AT module or the DTV module?
I haven't yet given up on the DTV quest. So that one is not for sale as yet.
I can sell the AT bluetooth module I don't really need anymore. 100 euros.

I was able to fit the digital TV module upgrade successfully. But the AT Bluetooth model did not work.

Hello @sspeeder ,
Being that your 05 already had an analog TV tuner, the SW of 223 should not be an issue, post pictures of the analog and replacement digital TV tuner you purchased, showing stickers with part numbers and sw/hw, maybe some pictures of what you see on the screen, does anything display on the screen, meaning any TV settings ?

Hello @Littlj01 James,
That message usually means that the unit is not plugged in, did you check the pins on both sockets, make sure non got bent, you are plugging both back in, correct ?
Next, what happens if you press the reset button on the infotainment head unit after pressing the phone button, if nothing, and all is plugged in, then press and hold the reset button for say 8 seconds to reset the system, it will go blank and restart.
