Vacuum leak. Can driving make it worst?

Vacuum leak. Can driving make it worst?
In the state where I live, the county I live in is the only one that requires emission testing. And just my luck I didn’t pass because of a vacuum leak. I can plate it in another county but I’m not trying to go through all that. The car is put up now but I was wondering how bad can I make it if I still drove it sometimes? Luckily Johnny has informed me that I don’t have the vacuum over the trans problem so finding some import shop to try the rack and pinion out option is on my to do list. I even took it to a Audi dealer and they said it’s a engine out job but this forum has taught me that it’s an alternative way to do it.

Edit: Here is the quote I received back after the “smoke test”

I sent you the bills, but I think engine out on mine was in the same range, $6,000 something plus parts.
Also, remember you don't want to replace it with plastic, use the stainless steel. If you don't want to spent $1,200 on factory stainless, there supposedly is a guy on here who will custom-bend, but you have to give him time. I didn't know about him until after we had already ordered the factory stainless lines.
And…of course, while you're in there, you probably want to do the O2 sensors too.
I'll let someone who knows more than me answer, but off the top of my head, I can't think of what would get hurt with a low vacuum, but the car will fight you because everything is connected. I bet you'll just get a miserable, lumpy idle. I had a fitting come off right after the lines were replaced and the idle was just terrible, it felt like something was wrong. But it accelerated fine.

Yea I talked to Jason, the guy that makes the lines. I think he quoted me like $200 for the lines. I was going to send my car to him but after doing the math, it would be the same as getting it done here. I’m going to buy the lines in a week or so and hope for the best. I can go the rack and pinion route as I don’t have the line over the trans.
