Air suspension

I am seeing a lot of air suspension post on here. Just taking a pole. How long do these shocks last?
Is it wise to replace them every 2, 5 or 10 years? Or is it more millage related? Did they improve the shocks on any model or year?

For those who have had them blow out were there any advanced signs?

Samhain is infamous around these parts
Hard to say since most of these cars are not driven all that much. My 2005 has 40k miles and is on the original air shocks. My 2005 VW Phaeton, which has the same system, has about 180k miles and I just replaced the fronts this year when my right front bag blew out. So they last a while.

My failure was abrupt - just heard a pop under the car and then about 30 seconds later the 'level fault - workshop!' icon appeared. Fortunately I was only about a mile from my house. I had no warning signs prior like the car dropping overnight or anything.
